Every year, several Indian films compete for the final berth at world’s most prestigious film festivals such as the Academy Awards (Oscars) and Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. Rarely do our films make it to the final round of nominations at the Oscars.
On the other hand, situation at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals is quite different as celebrated Indian filmmakers such as Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Neeraj Ghaywan and several other short filmmakers vie for top honours regularly and even clinched a few prestigious awards.
However, these indie filmmakers were often are left with no state and government support. In a good news for all filmmakers, the government of India is contemplating a cash amount of Rs. 1 Crore for films that compete at the Oscar awards and Rs. 50 lakhs for films in race at Cannes and Venice Film Festivals. Union I & B minister Rajyavardhan Rathore revealed the news. The move is yet to get a cabinet approval.
