Since “Baahubali” became an international name, there few critics who have blasted the film for its portrayal of women. A noted writer took a jibe at the way Avantika’s character gets explored by Sivudu and termed the whole thing as “Rape Of Avantika”. If all these noted film journalists are on one side, there comes this Telugu girl Annapurna Sunkara who blasted the whole of Telugu films in a sharp rhetoric.
“Women are not given due respect in Telugu industry and Telugu films“, she avers, nailing “Baahubali” for that undressing scene of Tamanna by Prabhas. “Telugu movies have come to a point where insulting someone is comedy, kicking someone is fun, talking about rape is entertainment” she says, expressing her anguish. Her objections, the scenes she filed as objectionable, are much more- “Mahesh talking about Samantha’s colour in Dookudu; 40 year old Pawan slapping 60 year old MS Narayana; Brahmi trying to rape Sonal Chauhan; Why women are portrayed such cheaply?”
Ali has doctorate but no sense at all-
“This cheap talking is not limited to movies, but it is taking real life too. Take Ali for example, a person who has doctorate but not common sense at all. How dare he is talk so cheaply between Suma and Allu Arvind? He comments on Samantha’s body, throws double entendres on short skirts of heroines“, said Annapurna. She doesn’t stop at hitting out Ali. “If we, the educated audiences, continuing laughing at Ali’s jokes, then there’s no use. He will continued to do so”
More on the “Rape Of Avantika” issue:
“In Puranas we called the one who insulted women and undressed her in a public eye as villains and demons. But now we’re enjoying Prabhas’ act as heroism. If a guy from Hyderabad falls in love with a lady solider from New Delhi, and if he strips her uniform upon reaching her after lot of hardships, will we enjoy the act?”
The conclusion:
“In India there are 48% women, so if you keep insulting women what are you making movies for?” she asks directors. She points fingers at audiences too. “Stop watching such insulting stuff and film makers. Films like Leader, Evade Subramanyam, Manam are the films we want to watch but not these unwanted item numbers and scrap. If audiences change, film makers will change”
Probably Telugu directors should give a thought about what Annapurna has said.
