One of the world’s super powers in all senses, China has set up the largest mosquito factory in the world in Guangzhou in the northwestern province. The factory will release one million sterilized mosquitoes every week in a move to reduce mosquito population with insects that don’t carry Dengue fever.
The project’s headquarters is in the Guangzhou Science City area from where the sterilized mosquitoes will be released into the Shazi Island every week. Apparently, this experiment has resulted in the diluting of mosquitoes by more than 90 percent. The project gained more prominence following the major outbreak of Dengue last year in which more than 47,000 cases in Guangzhou alone.
Also called as the ‘breakbone disease’, dengue is one of the most deadliest epidemics the world has been facing every year. The disease causes severe pain in the joints soon resulting into very high dengue hemorrhagic fever. The disease has no preventive medicine or treatment and it caused nearly 22,000 deaths around the world last year.
