Nevill’s Stumping Turns Controversial

If you watch the video of Australian wicketkeeper Peter Nevill stumping out Sri Lankan opener Dimuth Karunaratne during the third Test in Colombo, you will understand what all the hue and cry over the internet is about.

Dimuth Karunaratne was beaten outside off stump by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon. He was inside the crease but lazily lifted his back foot a just second to give enough time to the ever-alert wicketkeeper Peter Nevill to whip off the bails. After the third umpire declared the batsmen out, the reaction of the cricket lovers and experts has been pretty mixed.

Former Australian cricketers like Adam Gilchrist, Mitchell Johnson etc. praised Nevill, calling the dismissal as game awareness. Few others on social media questioned whether the stumping was in the spirit of the game. However, they also opine that Nevill’s act was legal, if not ethical. He just took advantage of the Sri Lankan batsman’s lazy foot work.
