After Local Try This Movie Too

As the effect of Sankranthi releases has almost faded away, Nani’s ‘Nenu Local’ has hogged all the limelight at theatres this Friday. Under the shadow of this Natural Star’s film, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s new dubbed film was also released.

Mohanlal’s 2016 hit Malayalam film ‘Oppam’ was released on 3rd Feb in the Telugu states as ‘Kanupapa’. As the complete attention of Telugu audiences was on ‘Nenu Local’, not many knew that Kanupapa was hitting screens on the same day. Many thought that this dubbed film would sink without a trace especially when it had a limited and silent release.

But, surprising all, the new Mohanlal starrer has reported good occupancy at theatres, as per trade reports. Since Mohanlal is riding high on the success of ‘Janatha Garage’ and ‘Manyam Puli’, his new film managed to get a par opening.

Kanupapa is the story of a blind protagonist. Directed by senior filmmaker Priyadarshan, this thriller is appreciated by critics for appealing content. The good response for this film is an indication that Telugu audience are encouraging content-driven cinema sans heroism.

Its time for our Telugu stars, especially seniors, to start experimenting more rather than limiting themselves in the image circle. In fact, makers of ‘Oppam’ had planned to remake it in Telugu with Venkatesh or Nagarjuna but the plan somehow didnt turn fruitful.
