While Indian cinema has forever been known to have got ‘inspired’ from or ‘copied’ Hollywood films, rarely we have heard of Hollywood remaking an Indian film. Probably for the first time, we have come across reports of a top Hollywood studio planning to remake a Bollywood film. Interestingly, it is a flop film.
The film in news is Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Kaabil’. The Hindi film’s director Sanjay Gupta has confirmed that they had been approached by 20th Century Fox for procuring the English remake rights. He added that discussions were in very premature stage.
Ironically, some critics pointed out that ‘Kaabil’ had drawn inspiration from Hollywood film, ‘Blind Fury’ (1989) and some plot elements from the Korean film, ‘Broken’ (2014). Hence, the news of a reputed Hollywood studio vying for the remake rights of Kaabil has surprised as much as it excited movie lovers.
Released in January this year, ‘Kaabil’ had a huge clash at box office with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’. Both films failed to live up to expectations, Kaablil was the bigger loser in comparison. Although the film received decent reviews, Kaabil somehow couldn’t convert that positive word of mouth into box office success.
