A Tsunami alert has been issued for the West Coast of US after a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska.
Based on the preliminary data, the US National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center alerted that ‘widespread hazardous tsunami waves were possible’ and told people living on the coast to “go to high ground or move inland”.
The earthquake prompted major Tsunami warning for Alaska and the west coast of Canada, and less severe tsunami alert was issued for the US west coast (the entire coasts of California and Oregon, and part of Washington state).
The quake hit about 150 miles south east of the town of Kodiak, Alaska at about 9.30 AM GMT on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported. Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, issued an extreme warning and said, “extraordinary threat to life or property”.
