Varavara Rao, the 80-year old Telugu poet-litterateur, literary critic and Telangana speaker who was incarcerated since 2018 in the Elgaar Parishad case, was rushed to st JJ hospital in Mumbai on Monday for proper treatment after his family complained about his worsening health condition.
Rao’s family had insisted the police to shift him from Tajola Central Jail in Navi Mumbai after receiving a call from him a couple of days ago. His daughter Pavani reported on Sunday that Rao’s speech was incoherent, delirious and talked irrelevant things that had occurred a decade ago. His co-inmates have informed the family that he couldn’t do any of his daily chores and depended on others.
They appealed that it is unfair practice to hold him in situations that pose threat to his fragile health. In the appeal the family mentioned that he has low levels of sodium/potassium and suffers high blood pressure, which requires an immediate transfer for proper treatment.
As per the latest reports, a group of 2,000 followers of him demanded that Varavara Rao, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, be immediately freed on bail from the prison, owing to his bad health condition.
They stated that he is in hallucination and unable to walk to even do his daily chores. Citizens, his students, teachers and journalists appealed to the police to release Rao immediately.
