The highly anticipated sci-fi film “Kalki 2898 AD,” directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas, has taken the box office by storm. Released on June 27th, the movie has already crossed a staggering 900 crores, garnering critical acclaim for its ambitious vision and exceptional performances.
Director Nag Ashwin is lauded for his audacity in crafting a unique cinematic experience. His ability to seamlessly manage a star-studded cast featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone has impressed audiences and critics alike. Notably, Ashwin openly acknowledges areas for improvement in the first installment, promising an even more impactful second part.
However, Ashwin emphasizes the paramount role played by Deepika Padukone’s character, Sumathi. He declares her performance as the film’s core, stating, “There is no story. There is no Kalki without Deepika’s role.” Her captivating portrayal establishes Sumathi as the emotional center of the film, an indispensable element in the lasting impact of “Kalki 2898 AD.”
One scene in particular exemplifies Deepika’s dedication and the film’s captivating power. Ashwin highlights the scene where Sumathi walks through fire, describing it as his personal favorite. He recounts the hurried nature of filming due to Deepika’s flight schedule. This very constraint, however, resulted in a magical moment. Ashwin elaborates, “Some of the most important or magical things in the film happen by chance or in a hurry… And this is what that was.” Witnessing Deepika navigate the fiery tunnel on the monitor, Ashwin knew it would be a defining moment in the film.
Ashwin emphasizes the centrality of Sumathi to the narrative. He explains, “We discussed this a lot when we were writing… whose character can you remove and the story itself will not remain? And that became Deepika’s character because if you remove her character, the story will not remain. Kalki will not remain.”
Deepika Padukone’s performance in “Kalki 2898 AD” transcends the boundaries of a supporting role. Her portrayal of Sumathi emerges as the cornerstone of the film’s narrative and emotional core, ensuring her place as a critical element in the success of this epic science fiction spectacle.
