The Andhra Pradesh High Court has never stepped back from reprimanding the actions of those who undermine the purity of the constitutional institutions, by saluting their political bosses. On a similar note, the HC’s remarks on Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Nilam Sawhney are now shocking everyone. The HC made these shocking statements in relation to the HC’s quashing of the Parishad Elections notification that Sawhney had released earlier.
The HC remarked that it was not right for the SEC to twist the orders of the Supreme Court according to their whims and fancies, and said that doing so was a disrespect to democracy itself. The HC also said that it’s sad to see that the SEC couldn’t properly understand the SC’s orders, as the orders were clear to everyone who had a basic knowledge of the English language.
The HC also said that it’s shocking to see that Sawhney, who previously worked as the Cheif Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, couldn’t properly understand the SC’s verdict. In this regard, the HC questioned Sawhney’s eligibility to function as the state’s election commissioner. The HC criticised how Sawhney took up charges as the SEC on the morning of April 1st and released a notification of the Parishad elections by the afternoon. It also questioned how the SEC could schedule the counting of votes on the 10th when the notification was itself released on the 1st?
The HC said that such kind of action goes directly against democratic values. On this note, the HC noted that Sawhney was previously faced with Contempt of Court charges when she didn’t abide by the previous SEC, Nimmagadda Ramesh’s requests, and said that she is now once again doing the same, by going against the HC’s and SC’s orders. Finally, the HC said that it’s not right for anyone to bend down to politicians, against the constitution and that this would go directly against democracy. The HC’s statements on Sawhney have now become a political discussion in AP.
