Contribution to Arts or Caste, why Ilayaraja was Nominated?

Legendary music director Ilayaraja is dubbed as a music maestro given the magic he does with his music. He was introduced to music at an early age and he has been in the film industry for over four long decades. He is among the first composers to introduce western instruments.

The ace music director is in the news with his nomination to the Rajya Sabha by the union government. Since yesterday, everyone is wishing the music director. Everyone thought that he was nominated under the arts category.

But the press release issued by the Centre announcing the nominations of the four candidates raised a new doubt. The document says Ilayaraja hails from the Dalit community and people from different communities were nominated

Until the document was made public, no one knows about the caste of Ilayaraja, and without knowing his caste, people loved him and are loving him. The press release took everyone by surprise and made people think if he was nominated for his contribution to the arts or looking at his community.

Another point that needs to be mentioned here that is, BJP’s Presidential Candidate Draupadi Murmu is also an ST candidate, and Ilayaraja also hails from the same community. Many think that to get a good image among the community, the BJP might have picked candidates for two posts.

Ilayaraja hailing from the Dalit community is not wrong. The question that is revolving in many heads is, didn’t the government see the contribution he did to Indian cinema/ or did the government simply consider his community details here?
