It is not uncommon for contempt of court cases to be filed against a state government, in the High Court of any state. However, the situation of the Andhra Pradesh government is entirely different. There are several contempt of court cases against the AP government, in the AP High Court.
AP’s Cheif Secretary Adityanath Das has several cases on him as well, and he regularly keeps visiting the High Court for hearings. He has even made several remarks against the HC in this regard. Usually, any state government is not supposed to go against the court’s orders – no matter what court it is. This is not the case with the AP government though, which regularly keeps defying the court’s orders, and the members of the government keep making derogatory comments against HC judges.
It is now being said that there are as many as 8,000 pending cases in the High Court, in which the AP government has been convicted of contempt of court. Two officers have already been convicted in the High Court, and it is expected that many more will be convicted in days to come. It is perhaps best for the AP government to stop defying the HC’s orders, which is the only way the government can escape this.
