The situation in Chennai and several others parts of Tamil Nadu has become worse with severe floods wreaking havoc on the entire state. Nearly 89 deaths and up to Rs 15,000 crore financial damage took place due to floods. However, the damage could have been even worse, without the AP government’s timely gesture towards the Tamil Nadu government’s request.
On Thrusday, the Tamil Nadu government requested the AP government to stop the excess discharge of flood waters from Krishnapuram and Pichtar dams across the overflowing rivers Kusasthali and Arani respectively to save the Tirvallur district in Tamil Nadu bordering with Chittoor district. AP government then closed the dam gates to control the overflow, even though the act means that several bordering villages in Chittoor were at a risk of heavy water inflows.
Chittoor and Nellore districts were also severely affected by the floods. Several villages in Chittoor received 131 percent excess rainfall, forcing the irrigation officials to lift 4 gates of Arani dam, 2 gates of Krishnapuram dam, 2 gates of Bahuda project and 6 gates of NTR project. The water was released even into irrigation canals to regulate the outflow and inflow at Arani and Krishnapuram.
