Indian astronomers map differential rotation of Sun’s chromosphere

0

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Using 100 years of daily records of the Sun at the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous institute of DST, have succeeded in mapping, for the very first time, the variation in the rotation speed of the Sun’s chromosphere — from the equator right up to its polar regions.

The research, published in the Astrophysical Journal, can help give a complete picture of the Sun’s inner workings.

Earth spins like a rigid ball, completing a full rotation every 24 hours. But the Sun, being a giant ball of plasma, has different parts that rotate at varied speeds, depending on their latitude.

Astronomers from the IIA used solar plages — a bright region in the Sun’s chromosphere — and networks from daily records of the Sun stretching over 100 years, maintained by the 125-year-old Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, operated by the IIA.

“The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory is just one of two such places in the entire world with such long-term data,” said Muthu Priyal, a co-author of the study, working at IIA.

“We hit on the idea of using solar plages and networks to measure rotation speeds. Images captured at the specific wavelength of 393.3 nanometers (due to the Calcium K spectral line) showcase the lower and middle chromosphere and display prominent features like plages (bright regions) and network cells (convective structures),” she added.

Unlike sunspots, plages are brighter regions with weaker magnetic fields. They reside in the chromosphere and are significantly larger than sunspots, ranging from 3 to 10 times the size of sunspots.

Network features, on the other hand, are embedded with weaker magnetic fields and are about 30,000 km across. They are slightly larger than individual sunspots but smaller than sunspot groups.

Both plages and networks are continuously present across the Sun’s surface throughout the solar cycle.

By analysing data from the Observatory, the team extracted the rotation period of these features at various latitudes.

This revealed a clear picture of the Sun’s differential rotation — faster at the equator (13.98 degrees per day) and slower towards the poles (10.5 degrees per day at 80 degrees latitude), said the team.

AIIMS Delhi, Intuitive sign MoU to establish surgical robotics training centre

New Delhi, Sep 24 (IANS) The All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi (AIIMS), New Delhi and Intuitive on Tuesday signed an MoU to establish an innovative new training centre for robotic-assisted surgery at the hospital.

The AIIMS da Vinci RAS training centre will focus on equipping surgeons and care teams with the skills and technology training necessary to perform robotic-assisted surgery across specialities including urology, gynaecology, general surgery and more.

This industry-academia collaboration will advance the adoption of robotic-assisted surgery in India by providing state-of-the-art technology training for more surgeons.

“We believe the AIIMS da Vinci RAS training centre will serve as a beacon of excellence, fostering training, skill, and knowledge development for the next generation of surgeons,” said Gary S. Guthart, CEO, Intuitive.

“With the rising disease burden in India — cancers, urologic, and gynaecological conditions requiring soft tissue surgery — the demand for advanced technologies like robotic-assisted surgery is growing. The need for associated training is clear in India,” added Dr M. Srinivas Director of AIIMS.

As part of the MoU, Intuitive will train surgeons and also provide ongoing support and training for surgeons and care teams throughout their careers, and as they advance in their use of RAS.

As part of Intuitive’s continuing effort to establish strong robotics programmes across India, the company has already established three training centres in different parts of the country.

More than 850 surgeons in India have been trained on da Vinci technology to date and are helping drive a significant increase in its adoption. “The da Vinci system offers enhanced precision, flexibility, and control, leading to improved surgical accuracy, reduced recovery times, and better patient outcomes,” Srinivas said.

The Director informed that as an early adopter of robotic surgery, AIIMS has a pool of experienced robotic surgeons who will mentor and train new surgeons nationwide. “This centre will play a crucial role in advancing surgical skills and elevating patient care standards across India,” he said.

Philippines aims to have commercial nuclear power plants by 2032

0

Manila, Sep 25 (IANS) The Philippines aims to have commercially operational nuclear power plants by 2032, with at least 1,200 megawatts (MW) initially entering the country’s power mix, the Philippines’ Department of Energy said on Wednesday.

The Philippines unveiled its nuclear energy roadmap at the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held in Vienna, Austria, last week, the department said in its press release.

During the high-level general debate of the IAEA conference, Philippine Energy Undersecretary Sharon Garin described 2024 as a landmark year for the Philippines with the release of its nuclear roadmap, which outlines the country’s path forward using the IAEA’s milestones approach to develop a nuclear program, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We aim to have commercially operational nuclear power plants by 2032, with at least 1,200 MW initially entering the country’s power mix, gradually increasing to 4,800 MW by 2050,” Garin said.

Garin emphasised that the Philippines has been actively working to establish an independent nuclear regulatory authority to oversee the safe and secure development of the country’s nuclear energy program.

She further noted that the government is giving high priority to the passage of key legislation focused on nuclear safety, ensuring that the legal and regulatory frameworks are in place to safeguard public health, environmental protection, and national security as the country moves toward harnessing nuclear power.

In November, the Philippines will host the International Nuclear Supply Chain Forum in Manila, bringing government and private sector stakeholders to explore partnership opportunities in nuclear energy.

Kenya’s mpox cases rise to seven

0

Nairobi, Sep 25 (IANS) Kenya’s Ministry of Health confirmed two more mpox cases, raising the total tally to seven, as the country intensifies surveillance to avert mass transmission of the virus.

Deborah Barasa, cabinet secretary in the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, said the two new cases were detected in Makueni county in Kenya and Kajiado county bordering Tanzania.

“No deaths have been reported among the confirmed cases. 61 contacts from the first five cases were traced, listed and monitored. Only one of the contacts tested positive for mpox,” Barasa said.

She added that the ministry had screened over a million travellers across 25 entry points since the outbreak began, Xinhua news agency reported.

Kenya has tested 190 samples for mpox from 28 counties, including the seven testing positive, according to Barasa.

She said the Ministry of Health is collaborating with local governments and other countries to contain mpox transmission.

The World Health Organization on August 14 declared mpox a public health emergency and called for a coordinated global response.

The declaration came after the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the mpox outbreak in the continent had posed a serious public health crisis.

Chile backs India’s permanent UNSC membership, Russia calls it ‘legitimate aspiration’

0

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Chile President Gabriel Boric Font has joined several world leaders, calling for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Addressing the general debate of the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the UN in New York, Font supported a reform of the United Nations, asserting that “the world has changed a lot” since 1945 when 51 countries, including Chile, took the transcendental step of creating the United Nations.

“I listened attentively this morning to the UN Secretary General, President Lula of Brazil, and President Biden of the United States explicitly expressing their agreement to reform the council according to today’s times. Who or what is preventing it? Is there anyone in this assembly who opposes it?” Font questioned during his speech.

“From Chile, I propose that we set a deadline for reform and that when the UN turns 80, it does so with a Security Council in line with the course of current times, in which Brazil from Latin America, India, at least one country from Africa, among others, are part. There is nothing that prevents it, except the lack of our own will,” he added.

On Sunday, following his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Quad Summit in Delaware, US President Joe Biden, while expressing his immense appreciation for India’s leadership at the world stage, reaffirmed Washington’s full support for India’s permanent UNSC membership.

“President Biden shared with Prime Minister Modi that the United States supports initiatives to reform global institutions to reflect India’s important voice, including permanent membership for India in a reformed U N Security Council,” read the Joint Fact Sheet on India-US Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership released after the meeting between the two leaders.

At the same time, given the emerging multipolar world order, Russia has also consistently supported the permanent membership of India in the UN Security Council.

On Wednesday, as he arrived in New York for the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov once again favoured a more representative Security Council with new members drawn from a group of developing countries, including India.

Moscow will support the legitimate aspiration of India, Brazil and one of African countries to join the UN Security Council as permanent members, Lavrov told Russian news agency Tass in an interview.

“Developing countries are under-represented in the Security Council, so, as we have always been saying, we support India and Brazil’s interest and legitimate aspiration to be included in the Security Council,” the top Russian diplomat said. “However, it is also necessary to satisfy African hopes. There are shared collective positions in Africa which we respect,” he noted.

Switzerland Man Dies in New Death Suicide Capsule

0

In a shocking development from southern Switzerland, police have reported that a man has committed suicide using a newly designed device known as the “Sarco” capsule. This capsule, resembling a small machine, was created to facilitate assisted suicide by allowing individuals to induce death in a controlled manner. The incident has raised significant concerns, leading to the arrest of several individuals suspected of aiding the man in his tragic decision. Authorities have registered a criminal case in connection with this event, highlighting the ethical and legal complexities surrounding assisted dying.

Police intervention followed reports of the suicide occurring in a secluded area near Merishausen. Upon investigation, authorities detained multiple individuals on suspicion of inciting suicide and assisting in the act. Among those arrested were members of a group advocating for assisted dying, known as The Last Resort. The organization has claimed that the individual who died was a 64-year-old American woman suffering from severe health issues, and they described her passing as “peaceful, fast, and dignified.” However, the legal implications of using such devices remain contentious.

The introduction of the Sarco capsule into discussions about assisted suicide reflects broader societal debates regarding end-of-life choices. While Switzerland has established legal frameworks for assisted dying under specific conditions, the use of devices like Sarco complicates these discussions. Critics argue that such innovations could glamorize suicide and lead to potential abuses. As investigations continue, this incident may prompt further scrutiny of assisted suicide practices and the ethical responsibilities of those involved in facilitating such options.

Mohan Babu’s Mansion Heist: Employee’s Shocking Steals ₹10 Lakhs!

Tollywood senior actor Mohan Babu has recently become a victim of burglary at his residence in Jalpally, which reportedly occurred two days ago. The theft has raised eyebrows, particularly because a long-time employee named Ganesh is the prime suspect. Ganesh, who had been working at Mohan Babu’s house for several years, has mysteriously gone missing since the incident. Family members of the actor suspect that he may have fled with the stolen items, which include a significant amount of cash.

Following the discovery of the burglary, Mohan Babu’s manager, Kiran Teja, filed a complaint with the Pahadi Sharif Police. The police promptly registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter. They began searching for Ganesh, who had not only vanished but also switched off his phone, making it difficult for authorities to track him down. The police are treating this case seriously due to its implications for both personal security and trust in domestic help.

In a swift turn of events, police managed to locate and arrest Ganesh in Tirupati. This incident is particularly troubling as it echoes previous cases where employees have exploited their positions of trust within celebrity households. Mohan Babu’s family is relieved that action has been taken but remains shaken by the breach of trust and security in their home.
