S. Korean population to shrink over 30 pc to world’s 59th in 2072

Seoul, Sep 23 (IANS) South Korea is projected to see its population drop significantly over the next 50 years, and its global population ranking fall by 30 notches over the ultra-low birth rate and rapid ageing, according to a report on Monday.

The country’s population is projected to reach 36 million in 2072, down 30.8 per cent from this year’s 52 million. Data from Statistics Korea showed that the country’s population peaked in 2020 and has been on a decline, Yonhap news agency reported.

The world population, however, is forecast to continue to rise during the cited period to reach 10.22 billion in 2072, compared with an estimated 8.16 billion this year.

South Korea was the world’s 29th most populous country in 2024, but the ranking is expected to fall to 59 in 2072, the report said.

The country is facing grim demographic challenges as many young people opt to postpone or give up on getting married or having babies in line with changing social norms and lifestyles, as well as amid the tough job market and rising home prices.

The fertility rate, the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime, came to a fresh low of 0.72 in 2023, down from 0.78 the previous year.

It was much lower than the replacement level of 2.1 that would keep South Korea’s population stable at 51 million, the report said.

According to the forecast, South Korea’s population dependency ratio is projected to grow to 118.5 people in 2072 from this year’s 42.5 people, which means much greater pressure on the productive population.

The ratio refers to the percentage of children aged 0-14 and adults aged 65 or older to 100 economically productive people, or those aged 15-64.

South Korea was the world’s 208th on the list involving 236 nations in 2024, but it is forecast to take third place in 2072 after Hong Kong and Puerto Rico, according to the data.

The share of people aged 65 or older reached around 19.2 per cent of the total population this year and is expected to surge to 47.7 percent in 2072.

The proportion of the working-age population, or those aged 15-64, came to about 70.2 percent of the total in 2024 but will sink to 45.8 per cent in 2072.

South Korea is widely expected to become a super-aged society in 2025, in which the proportion of those aged 65 and older will hit 20 percent of the total population.

The country became an aged society in 2017, as the proportion of such people exceeded 14 per cent.

North Korea’s population is forecast to peak in 2032 before falling to 23 million in 2072 from 26 million in 2024. As a result, the combined population of South and North Korea would come to 59 million in 2072, compared with 78 million in 2024.

India is the most populous country in 2024 with 1.45 billion people, followed by China with 1.42 billion and the United States with 345 million.

In 2072, India is forecast to maintain the top position, followed by China and the US.

Pooja Entertainment Faces Financial Turmoil Following Box Office Flops

0

Mumbai, India – The glitz and glamour of Bollywood often mask the underlying financial risks associated with the film industry. Pooja Entertainment, a prominent production house, is currently grappling with a significant financial crisis following the disastrous performance of its latest film, “Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.” The film, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, has incurred staggering losses of approximately ₹250 crore, leaving the company in dire financial straits.

The fallout from this box office flop has been swift and severe. Vashu Bhagnani, the head of Pooja Entertainment, has been forced to take drastic measures to manage the crisis, including selling the company’s seven-story office in Mumbai. This decision highlights the extent of their financial woes and signifies a major shift in their operational strategy. The proceeds from the sale are intended to alleviate some of the crushing debt accumulated due to a series of box office failures, including “Bell Bottom,” “Ganapath,” and “Mission Raniganj.”

The financial struggles have also had a significant impact on Pooja Entertainment’s workforce. Reports indicate that nearly 80% of employees have been laid off as part of cost-cutting measures. Additionally, former staff members have publicly expressed their frustration over unpaid wages, accusing the production house of unprofessional behavior. The growing discontent among crew members underscores the ethical dilemmas faced by those within the industry during such tumultuous times.

Despite these challenges, there remains a glimmer of hope as industry peers rally around Vashu Bhagnani and his son Jackky. Akshay Kumar, one of the leading actors in Bollywood, has offered his support by agreeing to defer his payments until all crew members receive their dues. This gesture reflects the close-knit nature of the industry and the importance of relationships during times of crisis.

As Pooja Entertainment seeks to stabilize its operations and rebuild its reputation, it faces an uphill battle against both financial instability and public scrutiny. The future remains uncertain, but the resilience of those involved will be crucial in determining whether this storied production house can rise from the ashes of its recent failures.

Shankar Expresses Disappointment Over Unauthorized Adaptation of Novel

0

Hyderabad, India – Renowned Indian filmmaker Shankar, known for his blockbuster films in the Tamil film industry, has publicly condemned the unauthorized use of key scenes from his acquired novel, “Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari.” The director, who has been a pioneer in message-oriented commercial cinema, took to social media to express his frustration over the blatant infringement of copyright.

Shankar, who is currently gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated film “Game Changer,” emphasized that he holds the copyright to the novel and has been disturbed to see crucial scenes being lifted and used without permission in multiple movies. He specifically mentioned being upset by a recent movie trailer that featured a significant scene directly from his novel.

The director’s statement has sparked widespread speculation among fans and industry insiders regarding the identity of the film in question. While the trailers of both “Kanguva” and “Devara” have recently been released, netizens are leaning towards “Devara” as a potential culprit. The film’s story, set against a coastal backdrop and featuring different communities, aligns with the themes and setting of Shankar’s novel. However, with “Kanguva” also being a possibility, the definitive answer remains unclear until the film’s release on 27th.

Shankar’s strong stance against copyright infringement serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting creators’ rights and the consequences of unauthorized adaptations. As the controversy unfolds, it is expected that further details and clarifications will emerge, shedding light on the specific movie that has crossed the line.
