Kiran engaged in an insightful conversation with Professor Shakuntala Banaji, Professor of Media, Culture and Social Change, and Sanam Arora, Founder and Chairperson of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK (NISAU). Kiran shared her thoughts on pushing the boundaries of storytelling in Indian cinema.

During the session, the filmmaker spoke about ‘Laapataa Ladies’ (Lost Ladies) tackling themes of identity, empowerment, and sisterhood through a satirical and humorous lens. The discussion resonated deeply with students, offering a rare glimpse into Kiran’s creative process and her vision for impactful filmmaking.

Speaking about her participation at the event, Kiran Rao said in a statement, “I am truly pleased to have had the opportunity to meet and interact with students at the London School of Economics and from universities throughout the UK through NISAU. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were inspiring. The discussion reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of storytelling to connect communities and spark change”.

Paternal intake of diabetes drug not linked to birth defects in babies

0

New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) Men with type 2 diabetes planning pregnancy can be reassured that taking the drug metformin may not increase the risk of birth defects in their baby, according to a large study on Thursday.

The findings, based on more than 3 million pregnancies and published by The BMJ, showed that metformin can continue to be considered a suitable drug for managing blood sugar levels in men planning to have children.

While metformin is widely used to treat type 2 diabetes in men of reproductive age, a recent Danish study reported a link between metformin use by fathers-to-be and an increased risk of congenital malformations, particularly genital, in male infants.

To understand, researchers from Taiwan and Norway set out to evaluate the link between the two.

They used national birth registries and prescription databases and identified 619,389 babies with paternal data during the period of sperm development (three months before pregnancy) in Norway during 2010-21, and 2,563,812 in Taiwan during 2004-18.

Among these, fathers of 2,075 (0.3 per cent) babies in Norway and 15,276 (0.6 per cent) babies in Taiwan used metformin during the sperm development period.

Looking at only men with type 2 diabetes, and adjusting the father’s age and related conditions, the team found no increased risk of any congenital malformations among infants born to those who used metformin during the sperm development period in neither Norway nor Taiwan.

And no notable increases in risk were also found for any specific organ malformations, including genital malformations.

“These results provide reassurance and can assist clinicians in making informed treatment decisions when selecting metformin in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus among men who are planning a family,” said the team from National Taiwan University, and the University of Oslo.

However, the team noted that the findings “are observational, so can’t establish a cause”. They also acknowledged limitations such as inaccuracy in diagnostic data and misclassification of drug use.

Gunmen crossing from Jordan wound two Israelis near Dead Sea

0

Jerusalem, Oct 18 (IANS) Two Israelis were wounded south of the Dead Sea by two or three gunmen who crossed the border from Jordan on Friday.

According to the report, one injured was in moderate condition, while the other was slightly wounded.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the gunmen opened fire on Israeli forces who were dispatched to the scene, Xinhua news agency reported quoting Israel’s state-owned Kan TV news.

Two gunmen were shot dead by Israeli forces, and an extensive search had been launched for a possible third who allegedly fled the scene, the IDF added.

According to Israel’s Channel 12 TV news, the gunmen probably wore Jordanian soldiers’ uniforms to disguise themselves, in an attempt to enter the village of Neot HaKikar near the border.

The Dead Sea is a landlocked salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east, the Israeli-occupied West Bank to the west and Israel to the southwest.

Nigeria rolls out new malaria vaccine

0

Abuja, Oct 18 (IANS) In a historic step in the fight against the deadly disease that has killed thousands of children under the age of five in Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria has rolled out a new malaria vaccine that will be given free of cost.

Nigerian Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, on Thursday said that 846,200 doses of the vaccine have been procured in partnership with global vaccine group Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Some 153,800 more doses are expected for delivery before the end of this month, totalling 1 million doses of the vaccine, he added.

The new R21 vaccine was developed by scientists at Oxford University and made by the Serum Institute of India and Novavax, Xinhua news agency reported.

Pate said ahead of the national rollout, the first phase of the vaccine’s rollout will begin next month in Kebbi and Bayelsa, where malaria prevalence has been particularly high. It will be administered as part of the West African country’s routine immunisation schedule for children under one year of age, with over 800,000 doses set to be distributed during this phase.

“The arrival of the malaria vaccine is a monumental step in our national efforts to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality,” the health minister told reporters.

Nigeria is the third African country to roll out the vaccine following its launch in Ghana and Kenya last year. According to data from UNICEF, Nigeria carries the highest burden of malaria globally, accounting for approximately 27 per cent of the global malaria burden and 31 per cent of global malaria deaths.

Nearly 200,000 deaths from malaria occurred in Nigeria last year, the UNICEF said, citing the 2023 World Malaria Report. Children under five and pregnant women are the most affected, with a national malaria prevalence rate of 22 per cent in children aged 6-59 months as of 2021.

Vikram Bhatt shares how Mahesh Bhatt brought ‘Tu Meri Poori Kahani’ into existence

0

On Friday, Vikram took to his Instagram, and shared a video capturing the BTS moments from his upcoming movie ‘Tu Meri Poori Kahani’.He shared how the senior filmmaker never found the need to claim the title of the superhit musical ‘Aashiqui’ when he set out to make the film. And, how he helped him bring ‘Tu Meri Poori Kahani’ to life.

‘Aashiqui’, which was released in 1990, was a humongous hit with all its songs turning out to be chartbusters with both its lead actors Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal turning into overnight stars. The film even inspired a second part ‘Aashiqui 2’ which starred Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur as leads.

Vikram also penned a long note in the caption praising Mahesh Bhatt. He wrote, “It’s ironic that parties should fight over the title Aashiqui when my boss (Mahesh Bhatt) made the film and did not even find the need to stake claim. Then I said to him, like the dialogue from the film ‘Deewar’, ‘Mere pass Bhatt sahab hain’. Don’t need any title when I have the one who creatively engineered it. Let’s do it again”.

He further mentioned, “A new boy – new girl love story with great music!” Boss thought a while and then said, ‘I have a story. Suhrita will direct it’. ‘Tu Meri Poori Kahani’ was born. Then came @ajay_murdia and he understood our dream and made it a reality! Here is the man Mahesh Bhatt and his rage, kicking ass like no one else does (sic)”.

Vikram Bhatt is known as the specialist of the horror genre, and the music of his films connects with the audience at large.

Following the disappointing reception of his film Agent, Akkineni Akhil’s career has faced a significant setback, leaving fans and industry insiders speculating about his next move. Despite various rumors and discussions, no official announcement regarding his upcoming projects has been made. Even on social media, Akhil has maintained a relatively low profile, offering little insight into his future endeavors.

Initial plans for a new film under the banner of UV Creations with a fresh director were considered, but these discussions ultimately did not yield a concrete decision.
