SpaceX, Blue Origin to launch key rockets to space on Sunday

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ space venture Blue Origin is expected to make crucial launches to space on Sunday.

SpaceX will make the fifth test flight of the 400-foot-tall Starship rocket along with the Heavy booster — the world’s largest and most powerful rocket.

Blue Origin, on the other hand, will try again to debut its second human-rated spacecraft, nearly a week after technical issues thwarted its first launch attempt.

“Targeting Sunday, October 13 for Starship’s fifth flight test,” SpaceX said, noting that the launch “will aim to take another step towards full and rapid reusability”.

The company is expected to lift off at 8 a.m. EDT (5:30 pm IST) from its Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach in South Texas.

With the fifth test flight, SpaceX aims to “attempt the first ever return to the launch site and catch of the Super Heavy booster and another Starship reentry and landing burn, aiming for an on-target splashdown of Starship in the Indian Ocean,” the company said.

This comes after a successful Flight 4 on June 6, which made the first-ever soft-landing of the booster in the Gulf of Mexico and Starship making it a “brilliant reentry”.

Meanwhile, Blue Origin, after calling off the debut of its second human-rated spacecraft on October 7 due to a rocket issue will make another attempt today.

The launch of the company’s uncrewed NS-27 mission to suborbital space is expected to be at 8:30 a.m. EDT (6.00 pm IST)

The second human-rated New Shepard vehicle consists of a first stage known as Booster 5 and a crew capsule named RSS Karman Line. Karman Line is the internationally recognised boundary of space

While uncrewed, the NS-27 mission will fly 12 research payloads, five of them on the booster and seven inside the capsule. This includes new navigation systems developed for New Shepard and Blue Origin’s huge New Glenn rocket, as well as two LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors designed to operate in the lunar environment, according to Blue Origin.

India, US working together to expand strategic technology partnership

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) India and the US are working together to expand the strategic technology partnership and connect scientists from both the countries to collaborate on emerging technologies such as AI and smart connected cities, the government has said.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said this while presenting the Indo-US Endowment awards to 17 winning teams, to work together primarily to develop AI-enabled tech and quantum technologies.

Speaking at the US-India Science and Technology Endowment Fund (USISTEF) award function here, attended by US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, Dr Singh said as a part of the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), new implementing agreements have been executed between the science agencies to expand international collaboration in a range of areas to build a robust innovation ecosystem.

“The DST-National Science Foundation joint call in the areas of computer and information science and engineering, cyber-physical systems and secure and trustworthy cyberspace has resulted in the award of 11 high pitch proposals,” the minister informed.

India and the US are at the pivotal point with the technologies shaping up for the future like artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, blockchain, green energy and quantum computing, getting ready to make one of the biggest technology transformations of the century.

In the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government “is creating an enabling innovation ecosystem with recent reforms like design linked incentives for semiconductors, PLI schemes for automobiles, drone policy and removing barriers through initiatives like faceless assessment,” said Dr Singh.

From 350 startups in 2014, the number swelled to over 1,40,000 startups. India is also home to over 110 unicorns where 23 of them emerged only last year, which is a sign of India’s rapid upward ride on the STI (science, technology and innovation) ladder, the minister informed.

UN peacekeepers to stay in positions in Lebanon

United Nations, Oct 15 (IANS) UN peacekeepers will stay in all their positions in Lebanon despite the calls made by Israeli authorities to vacate the positions that are in the vicinity of the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel, the UN Peacekeeping Chief said.

“The decision was made that UNIFIL (UN Interim Force in Lebanon) would currently stay in all its positions in spite of the calls that were made by the Israel Defense Forces to vacate the positions that are in the vicinity of the Blue Line,” said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN under-secretary-general for peace operations, after briefing the Security Council on Monday on the situation in Lebanon.

“I want to emphasise that this decision still remains,” he said, adding that the decision was confirmed earlier on Monday by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and was carefully considered based on “a number of elements and criteria”.

“Of course, the safety and security of the peacekeepers is a paramount priority,” said Lacroix as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council on Monday expressed its strong concern over the ongoing hostilities across the Blue Line.

“Against the backdrop of the ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line, the members of the Security Council expressed their strong concern after several UNIFIL positions under fire in the past days,” said Pascale Baeriswyl, president of the Security Council for October and permanent representative of Switzerland to the United Nations.

“Several peacekeepers have been wounded,” she said in a statement after closed-door Security Council consultations.

The members of the Security Council urged all parties to respect the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel and UN premises, reiterating their support for the mission, and underscoring its role in supporting for regional stability, she added.

Baeriswyl noted that the council members expressed their deepest concern over civilian casualties and sufferings, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the rising number of internally displaced people.

They called on all parties to abide by international humanitarian law, called for the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701, and emphasised the need for “diplomatic endeavours that would bring a durable end” to the conflict and allow civilians on both sides of the Blue Line to return safely to their homes, she added.

Italy transfers first migrants to controversial asylum centres in Albania

Rome, Oct 15 (IANS) Italy has begun transferring migrants to two controversial new facilities in Albania, local media reported.

On Monday, the Italian navy ship Libra was transporting the first group of asylum-seekers to one of the reception centres located in the Albanian towns of Shengjin and Gjiade, reports Xinhua, quoting Ansa news agency reported.

The migrants will undergo identification procedures and remain at the centres until the Italian authorities can process their asylum requests.

In early November 2023, the Italian government signed a five-year deal with Albania to create the two centres.

The facilities will accommodate migrants who have been rescued within Italy’s search and rescue area in the Mediterranean by the Italian navy and coast guard and who intend to seek asylum in Italy.

Transfers to the centres will involve migrants from countries of origin that Italy considers safe, but not minors, women, elderly or otherwise vulnerable people, according to the Italian authorities.

However, the project has caused controversy at the domestic and European level. The centres have been criticised by centre-left and left-wing political forces and human rights groups, who are concerned that asylum seekers’ rights will not be sufficiently protected in Albania.

On the other hand, right-wing political forces in Italy and Europe view the project as a possible model for managing irregular immigration.

In an interview with La Stampa newspaper on Sunday, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed that the two centres had become officially operational and were ready to receive their first intake this week.

Piantedosi also said that the Albanian centres are “similar to those in Italy”, and will operate under a “light detention regime”.

The project will be managed by the Italian Interior Ministry, and the centres will be run by Italian staff. Meanwhile, Albania will provide security on the perimeter.

The number of migrants hosted in Albania will not be allowed to exceed 3,000.

Millions of Australian households experiencing food insecurity

Sydney, Oct 15 (IANS) Millions of Australian households are experiencing severe food insecurity, according to a report published on Tuesday by hunger relief charity Foodbank Australia.

The report said 3.4 million households across the country experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months. Of those, 2 million households experienced severe food insecurity.

Food insecurity is defined by the Australian government as whenever the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or the ability to acquire acceptable food in socially acceptable ways is limited or uncertain.

The annual Foodbank report found that 97 per cent of severely food-insecure households skipped meals or cut meal sizes and that half of adults experiencing severe food insecurity went entire days without eating due to affordability, Xinhua news agency reported.

Over 80 per cent of food-insecure households cited the rising cost of living as a factor.

“More than half of food-insecure households are now at the severe end of the food insecurity spectrum. For these families, it’s not just about cutting back, it’s about missing meals entirely, sometimes for days,” Brianna Casey, chief executive of Foodbank Australia, said.

“This is no longer a crisis of temporary hardship but a prolonged, systemic issue affecting millions of Australians,” she said. “These households live with the daily anxiety of not knowing where their next meal will come from, forced to choose between essentials like food, housing and utilities.”

Among households that experienced severe food insecurity, 97 per cent worried about running out of food before having enough money to buy more and 93 per cent were unable to afford balanced meals.

One-quarter of food-insecure households reported having support from friends and family, down from one-third in 2023.
