Oxford University Press launches trilingual Sanskrit-Hindi-English dictionary

0

New Delhi, Oct 11 (IANS) The Oxford University Press (OUP) on Friday announced the launch of a trilingual Sanskrit-Hindi-English dictionary to make the Sanskrit language accessible to learners across the globe.

This aligns with OUP’s vision of advancing knowledge and learning in unison with the Ministry of Education at the same time increasing the number of languages covered in the bilingual dictionaries India portfolio to 13 (which includes 9 Classical Languages).

Oxford dictionaries are now available in Sanskrit, Bengali, Assamese, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi.

“Oxford University Press is dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of languages, fostering a global commitment to linguistic diversity, and knowledge dissemination. This trilingual dictionary represents a significant milestone in our commitment to promoting language learning and our cultural heritage,” said Sumanta Datta, Managing Director, OUP India.

“It will be a valuable resource for students embarking on the journey of learning Sanskrit, in keeping with the NEP 2020 and NCF 2023 guidelines,” he added.

The new dictionary was published in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthanam (UPSS).

The new Oxford Sanskrit-Hindi-English dictionary includes over 25,000 words carefully chosen for the learners of Sanskrit keeping in mind the relevance of words keeping in mind the vision that every Sanskrit student would be conversant and fluent in simple standard Sanskrit 10 years from now.

In addition, the OUP also announced the release of three other dictionaries: Compact English-English-Urdu Dictionary, Mini Hindi-English Dictionary, and English-Hindi Dictionary.

Earlier this year, OUP launched the English-English-Assamese Dictionary and the Mini English-Bengali Dictionary.

Sanskrit gained its ‘Classical’ status in 2005. Linguists proposed that both Sanskrit and many European languages trace their roots back to a common ancestor known as Proto-Indo-European.

This theoretical language is believed to have been spoken thousands of years ago, acting as a linguistic blueprint for diverse language families spread across continents.

The linguistic connections between Sanskrit and European languages also offer insights into migration patterns, cultural exchanges, and the evolution of languages over millennia transcending time and borders.

Israeli airstrike in Gaza kills three, injures 40 as tensions escalate

Gaza, Oct 14 (IANS) At least three Palestinians were killed on Monday in an Israeli airstrike that targeted the tents of displaced persons in Deir al-Balah, located in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources.

Medical sources indicate that Israeli aircraft targeted the tents of displaced individuals near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, resulting in three fatalities and 40 injuries. A spokesperson from the hospital noted that the emergency department was overwhelmed by the influx of casualties.

In a press statement, the Hamas-run government media office in Gaza condemned the Israeli military for the attack, holding both the Israeli army and the US administration fully responsible for the continued violence. The statement called on the international community to pressure Israel into halting its actions, Xinhua news agency reported.

In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Monday said the Israeli Air Force had conducted a “precise strike” on militants operating inside a command and control centre in the Deir al-Balah area.

According to the IDF, the command centre was embedded within a compound that had previously served as Shuhadah Al-Aqsa Hospital, also known as Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, and was being used by Hamas militants to coordinate and execute attacks against IDF troops and the State of Israel.

Israel’s large-scale military offensive in Gaza was launched in retaliation for a Hamas assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, during which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 250 were taken hostage.

As of Sunday, the Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 42,227, according to Gaza-based health authorities.

Controversy Surrounds Removal of Donkey from “Bigg Boss 18”

0

Mumbai, India – The recent season of the popular reality television show “Bigg Boss 18” has been embroiled in controversy following the removal of a donkey named Gadhraj from the competition. The decision came after PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) urged the show’s producers to reconsider the use of live animals in such a high-stress environment.
Gadhraj, who had been introduced as a unique twist to the show, faced significant backlash from viewers concerned about animal welfare. Many expressed concerns about the ethical implications of keeping a donkey in a chaotic environment filled with unpredictable human behavior and intense competition. While some fans found the novelty of having an animal on the show entertaining, others questioned the appropriateness of such an arrangement.

As tensions among contestants escalated, viewers began to voice their concerns about Gadhraj’s well-being. Calls for the donkey’s removal grew louder, prompting the production team to take action. In a statement, the producers emphasized their commitment to animal welfare and explained that while Gadhraj was well cared for during its time on the show, they had to balance entertainment value with ethical considerations.

The removal of Gadhraj from “Bigg Boss 18” has sparked a wider debate about animal rights and the responsibilities of reality television producers. This incident highlights a growing awareness among audiences about the ethical implications of using animals in entertainment. As society’s standards for compassion and responsibility evolve, producers may need to reevaluate their approaches to ensure that their content aligns with these values.

The controversy surrounding Gadhraj’s removal serves as a reminder that entertainment should not come at the expense of animal welfare. As audiences become more discerning and demanding, producers may need to prioritize ethical considerations in their decision-making processes.

Bollywood Feud: Karan Johar and Divya Khosla Kumar Clash Over Box Office Claims

0

A heated controversy has erupted in the Indian film industry between renowned producer Karan Johar and actress-producer Divya Khosla Kumar. The dispute centers around the box office performance of their respective films, “Jigra” and “Savi,” both produced by Dharma Productions and T-Series, respectively.

The conflict ignited when Divya accused Karan’s protégé, Alia Bhatt, of purchasing tickets to “Jigra” to artificially inflate its box office numbers. Karan responded with a cryptic Instagram post, suggesting that silence was the best response to “fools.” Divya countered with a quote about truth offending those opposed to it, further intensifying the exchange.

Media reports indicated that “Jigra” had grossed a significant ₹4.5 crore on its opening day. However, Divya dismissed these figures, alleging that they were inflated by the production house. This claim is particularly intriguing given the similar premise of both “Jigra” and “Savi,” which both involve a prison break. Despite the narrative similarity, “Savi” underperformed at the box office, grossing only ₹7.83 crore in its two-week theatrical run.

Another potential factor contributing to the feud is the box office competition between “Jigra” and “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video,” a film produced by Divya’s husband, Bhushan Kumar. Divya’s public criticisms could potentially complicate Bhushan’s negotiating position for future projects, including the highly anticipated “Animal Park.”

As the feud continues to escalate, fans and industry insiders are closely watching to see how this conflict will impact the careers of both Karan Johar and Divya Khosla Kumar, as well as the future of their respective production houses. The controversy has raised questions about the transparency of box office reporting and the potential influence of industry insiders on film success.
