In a big blow, AIADMK’s interim general secretary and CM nominee VK Sasikala was sentenced to jail. The Supreme Court ordered Sasikala to serve the rest of her jail sentence of 3yrs and six months as she has already served almost 6 months in jail.
Pronouncing the judgement on the most-awaited disproportionate assets case that has been listed for hearing in the Supreme Court on Tuesday at 10:30 am, the Supreme Court has upheld the trail court’s judgement convicting her in the 21-year-old.
In its 2000-page verdict, Supreme Court has directed Sasikala to surrender immediately. This is seen as ‘end of the road’ for Sasikala and her chief ministerial ambitions as she stands disqualified to take over as Tamil Nadu chief minister.
The Karnataka government had challenged the May 11, 2015, Karnataka state High Court verdict acquitting Jayalalithaa, Sasikala and her two relatives – VN Sudhakaran and Elavarasi – for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore during her first term as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996.
