Hyderabad: The State Human Rights Commission has directed the GHMC to provide employment to about 1,600 persons who had been sacked when they refused to rejoin duty during the municipal staff strike in July.

The petition was filed by the JAC representing workers. “The GHMC officials took vengeance and there was no ground to remove the workers. The salaries were hiked on July 16, but the workers who were on strike on July 15 were removed,” a JAC representative said.

“The contract employees of GHMC are not permitted to report for the duty and thereby their right to livelihood is denied which ultimately amounts to denial of right to life,” SHRC secretary D. Subramanyam, said. “Though sufficient time was given, GHMC didn’t counter the allegations,” it stated. It recommended that the petitioners be given employment within a month.
