Hyderabad Race Club (HRC), situated at Malakpet in Hyderabad is one of the top race courses in India. But, Telangana Government is considering of taking over the club that is covered in 127 acres of land in the city.

Reason for this is, although crores of business is happening in the club, the management is not paying taxes to the state government. HRC’s income in 2014 alone is around Rs 600 crores. Recently income tax department officials raided few licensed bookies and recovered unaccounted sum of Rs 51 lakh from them.

So, Telangana Government is looking for the possibilities of taking control of the management and running the race club, informs Commercial Taxes minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav. In fact, HRC is in Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s first list of lands to be acquired. Back to history, horse racing in Hyderabad was initiated by the Nizam Asaf Jah VI in 1868 at Moula-Ali.

In 1886 the racing was shifted to Malakpet by HH Nawab Mir Mahboob Ali Khan as he wanted the race club to be nearer to his palace. As mentioned by Talasani, TS government is taking legal opinion to initiate the process on undertaking HRC into their control.
