Amaravathi, the proposed capital for Andhra Pradesh, will be reportedly facing eight major environmental challenges which will impact local atmosphere and result in adverse climatic events in this region, according to a document prepared by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The report has stated that degradation of vegetation, lack of control on automobile and industrial emissions, uncontrolled concretization, followed by unchecked mining activity in the surrounding hills as well as emissions from paddy fields and other agro-processing resulted in a fragile ecology of the region.
The document has also reportedly suggested that introducing energy efficient systems, scientific way of closing abandoned mines and creating green zones can maintain the capital region healthy. It also revealed that extensive concrete bunds as well as sand dunes in the river and irrigation canals are causing re-radiation, causing increase in the average temperatures.
Vijayawada region and the whole coastal belt, is facing several sustainability challenges due to climate change. The report says that climate change affect poor, small and marginal farmers. Experts say that AP Government has to pay attention to this report.
