We regularly see Tamil films doing exceptionally well in the Telugu states. Even Tier 2 heroes of Kollywood have a very good market in Telugu. Starting from Vijay Antony to Rajnikanth, most of the Tamil heroes released their films in the Telugu states and got good collections. They make sure that their films have a simultaneous release in both Tamil as well as Telugu.
But not many Telugu heroes dare to do that. Though ‘Baahubali’ brought a change to that mindset, many still feel that Telugu films are not as successful in Tamil compared to how their films perform in AP & Telangana. We have seen a few biggies like ‘Baahubali’ movie series, two chapters of ‘KGF’, ‘RRR’ and ‘Kantara’ being exceptions.
Telugu heroes are aiming at a pan-India market and promoting their movies across the nation. But they are getting more recognition and reception from North India compared to Tamil Nadu. Movies like ‘Dasara’ and ‘Virupaksha’ which did amazingly well in Telugu were not well received by the Tamil audience. During the press meet of ‘Thangalaan’, Vikram was asked the reason for it by a journalist.
‘Thangalaan’ is a Tamil word and it is releasing in Telugu with the same title. Pa Ranjith directed this film which is going to hit the screens on 26th January 2024. During the teaser launch in Hyderabad, a journalist asked the reason for Telugu films not doing as well as Tamil films in each other’s states.
Vikram replied that there is no such thing and claimed that it is ‘Baahubali 2’ which was the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu till a long time. He even mentioned films like ‘Kantara’, ‘KGF’ and ‘RRR’ which did great business. He said that the audience are interested in watching movies from other languages too and this video is going viral now. There are mixed responses to Vikram’s answer as the money earned by Tier 2 heroes of Tamil Nadu in the Telugu states is more than what Telugu star hero movies get in Tamil Nadu according to many.
