IIT Delhi transfers 2 indigenous health technologies to industry
New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) Two indigenous healthcare technologies developed by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) researchers were transferred to industry, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said on Thursday.
The technologies aim to detect prostate cancer and infectious pathogens early.
DNA Aptamer for prostate cancer detection was transferred to Swapnil Sinha, HUMMSA Biotech, Kolkata, and photonic chip-based spectrometric biosensor technology for pathogen detection was given to Nitin Zaveri, UNINO Healthcare, Mumbai.
Developed under the MeitY-funded project called Nanoelectronics Network for Research and Applications (NNetRA), the technologies were transferred on July 31, at an event hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
“We envision a future where technology transfer drives innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development. Measures should be taken to ensure successful adoption, implementation, and commercialisation of technology,” said S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY.
The aptamer, developed by Prashant Mishra and team from IIT Delhi is capable of binding to the specific oncogenes and could be useful as theranostics for prostate cancer.
On the other hand, the spectrometric biosensor was developed by Joby Joseph and the team from IIT Delhi. It will enable quick and accurate detection of pathogens, thereby aiding in preventing infectious diseases.
Monument set up to commemorate North Korean defectors who died during escapes
Seoul, Aug 1 (IANS) The South Korean Unification Ministry on Thursday unveiled a monument near the inter-Korean border to commemorate North Korean defectors who lost their lives during escapes from the repressive regime.
The monument was set up at the Odusan Unification Observatory in Paju, a border city just south of the Demilitarised Zone separating the two Koreas, the ministry said in a release, Yonhap news agency reported.
The move came as the government has designated July 14 as the official day for North Korean defectors. The date marks the enactment of the law on protecting North Korean defectors and supporting their settlement, which came into effect on this date in 1997.
The ministry held a ceremony to unveil the monument, bringing together Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho; Tae Yong-ho, the Secretary-General for the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council; and around 60 North Korean defectors.
The monument has the inscription, “To commemorate the ‘yearning’ and ‘courage’ of North Korean defectors for freedom, and to honour those who sacrificed their lives during their defection journey.”
In a speech, Minister Kim emphasised the significance of the establishment of North Korean defectors’ day and the monument, expressing his commitment to spreading their noble courage.
South Korea has a longstanding policy of accepting any North Korean defectors who wish to live in the South. Currently, South Korea is home to more than 34,000 North Korean defectors. The flow of defectors continues amid chronic food shortages and harsh political oppression in North Korea.
In the first half of the year, the number of North Korean defectors arriving in South Korea reached 105, slightly up from 99 the previous year.
Confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease soar up to 60 in Melbourne
Sydney, Aug 1 (IANS) Authorities said on Thursday that a major outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease resulted in 60 confirmed cases in the Australian state of Victoria.
The Victorian Department of Health initially issued a public alert over “a significant increase in cases notified across metropolitan Melbourne and surrounding areas” on Monday, while the confirmed cases continued to rise in the following days, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the newly updated warning, the health department has so far been notified of 60 confirmed and 10 suspected cases since July 26, mostly in adults aged over 40 years.
The majority of the infected patients were hospitalised, with multiple of them also admitted to intensive care for “severe community-acquired pneumonia.”
Local investigators are currently probing the source of the outbreak through testing of local cooling towers and other potential sources.
The Victorian Department of Health also confirmed that the outbreak is linked to Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, which can be detected through a urinary antigen test.
As all cases visited or reside in metropolitan Melbourne, adults aged over 40 years, particularly those with other medical conditions or immune compromise, or who smoke have been urged to stay alert and seek urgent medical care if any symptom develops.
Earlier, the health authority reported on Tuesday that 33 cases of Legionnaires’ disease were confirmed in the state, after which the figure almost doubled within two days.
