X becomes group chat for Earth, says Elon Musk

New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Monday said that his X social media platform has become a group chat for Earth, with maximum traffic coming from all over the world.

X now has 600 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally.

“X is the group chat for Earth,” Musk posted.

A user commented that “X is a global town square for the people”.

“New X feature inbound… Earth Chat,” another posted.

The tech billionaire, who acquired X (then called Twitter) in 2022 for $44 billion, is aiming to make it an “everything app” where people can post movies and TV shows and also make digital payments.

“Around 76 billion total user-seconds in the US, beating the previous record by 5 per cent,” the X owner announced.

In March, X reported that users are spending 30 minutes per day on the platform on average.

When Twitter was acquired by Musk in October 2022, it was basically a 140-character messaging app.

At the time of its $44 billion acquisition, there were about 3,500 creators on the platform.

5 US universities win NASA’s 2024 Human Lander Challenge

New York, June 30 (IANS) Five US universities have won NASA’s 2024 Human Lander Challenge (HuLC) for different innovative concepts addressing the complex issue of managing lunar dust during the impending Moon exploration campaign Artemis, the space agency said.

Dust mitigation during the landing of the Artemis mission is a key challenge that NASA and its partners aim to address in exploring the lunar South Pole region and establishing a long-term human presence on the Moon.

The team from the University of Michigan was selected as the overall winner, NASA said. The university was awarded $10,000.

The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign bagged the second prize and a $5,000 award, followed by the University of Colorado Boulder which received a $3,000 award.

Further, Texas A&M University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott bagged the Excellence in Systems Engineering award.

The universities are part of the 12 finalists, selected in March 2024, and developed proposed systems-level solutions that could be potentially implemented within the next 3-5 years to manage or prevent clouds of dust — called lunar plume surface interaction — that form as a spacecraft touches down on the Moon.

The teams were selected after the final round held between June 25 and 27 near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama.

Don Krupp, associate programme manager for the HLS Programme said that “managing and reducing the threat of lunar dust is a formidable challenge to NASA.”

He added that the space agency is “committed to real solutions for our long-term presence on the Moon’s surface.”

Nearly 2,000 households evacuated amid potential floods in Myanmar

Yangon, July 1 (Xinhua) Nearly 2,000 households in northern Myanmar’s Kachin State have been evacuated as the Ayeyarwady River overflowed above the danger mark due to heavy rains, according to the Kachin state government on Monday.

There have been no reported fatalities and ongoing rescue operations, a member from the Kachin stated government, reported Xinhua news agency.

The affected residents have been moved to temporary shelters in 30 schools, churches, and monasteries across the region, he said.

According to local media reports, more than 1,000 people are trapped in Myitkyina and Waingmaw townships due to heavy rains.

According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on Monday, the Ayeyarwady River overflowed about five feet above the danger mark in Myitkyina Township.

The river is expected to rise by another two feet in the next two days and remains above the Myitkyina Township’s danger mark.

Canberra, July 1 (IANS) Australia’s new Governor-General has been sworn in as the official representative of the British monarch in the country.

On Monday, Samantha Mostyn was sworn in as Australia’s 28th Governor-General at an official ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra, reports Xinhua news agency.

A prominent business and community leader, Mostyn becomes the second woman to serve as Australia’s Governor-General.

Speaking after the ceremony, she vowed to bring kindness, care and respect to the role.

“These testing times call for an unstinting focus on kindness, on care and on respect,” Mostyn said.

“I will be an optimistic, modern and visible Governor-General, committed to the service and contribution that all Australians expect and deserve from the holder of this office.”

As the representative of the British monarch, currently King Charles III, the Governor-General performs constitutional duties, including formally appointing the Prime Minister and other ministers, ordering elections and giving royal assent to bills passed by the parliament.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced in April that Mostyn would replace David Hurley, whose five-year term ended on Sunday.

Mostyn, 59, started her career as a lawyer before serving on the boards of several companies, including NGOs, the Climate Council and mental health support organisation Beyond Blue.

Prior to being appointed as the governor-general, she was the chair of the government’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce.

She said on Monday that Australia is facing great difficulties in climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic but that she feels tremendous optimism about the country’s future.
