Netanyahu says intense fighting in Gaza to end ‘very soon’
Jerusalem, June 24 (IANS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that intense fighting against Hamas is “very close” to an end.
In an interview with Israeli Channel 14 TV news, Netanyahu on Sunday said that “the intensive phase of the war in Rafah is about to end”, and the Israeli forces were “very close” to concluding the “intensive phase” in the entire Gaza Strip.
However, he said, this does not mean an end to the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, and operations will persist with the fighting against Hamas targets, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Israeli news broadcaster.
After the conclusion of the “intensive phase” in Gaza, “we will continue northward,” Netanyahu said, referring to Israel’s warnings of launching a full-fledged war against the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
He said that any agreement to secure a ceasefire along the Israel-Lebanon border, where Israeli and Hezbollah forces have traded fire since October 7, 2023, “will have to meet our terms.”
He stated he would only agree to a deal that would see Hamas removed from power in the Gaza Strip and the release of about 100 hostages who are still held in the Palestinian enclave.
Seven killed in landslide in Afghanistan
Kabul, June 24 (IANS) At least seven people have been confirmed dead as a landslide struck a village in east Afghanistan’s Paktia province, state-run media Bakhtar News Agency reported on Monday.
The natural disaster happened late Sunday in the province’s Jakaorgor village in Janikhail district when the landslide swept through a residential house, reports Xinhua news agency.
People in remote areas of Afghanistan mostly inhabit mud houses, which are vulnerable to natural disasters, including downpours, snowfall, and earthquakes.
Iran, Bahrain agree to begin talks on bilateral ties resumption
Tehran, June 24 (IANS) Iran and Bahrain have agreed to start talks on the resumption of bilateral political relations following an eight-year diplomatic freeze, the two countries announced in a joint statement.
Iran’s Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met in the Iranian capital Tehran on Sunday within the framework of the two countries’ historical and brotherly relations, religious and neighborly bonds, shared history and mutual interests, according to the joint statement published on the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website early Monday.
“In this meeting, the two sides agreed on the creation of the necessary mechanisms for starting bilateral talks on how to resume relations between their countries,” the statement said, reports Xinhua news agency.
The meeting was held as the Bahraini minister is on a visit to Tehran at the invitation of the Iranian caretaker foreign minister to attend the 19th Meeting of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting on Monday, according to the joint statement.
In 2016, Bahrain severed diplomatic relations with Iran following Saudi Arabia’s decision to cut ties with Tehran. The move came in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, which occurred after the execution of a Shiite cleric by Saudi Arabia.
In March 2023, Saudi Arabia and Iran reached a groundbreaking agreement in China to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions. The two countries formally declared in April of last year the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect.
