Israel rescues four hostages held by Hamas since October (Ld)

Jerusalem, June 8 (IANS) Israel on Saturday announced that its forces have in two separate special operations rescued four Israeli hostages, including 25-year-old Noa Argamani, held by Hamas in Gaza since October 7, last year.

All four, including Argamani, Almog Meir Jan (21), Andrey Kozlov (27), and Shlomi Ziv (40) were rescued in a special operation conducted by the Israel Defence Force (IDF), the Israel Security Agency (ISA) – also referred to as Shin Bet – and Israel Police from two separate locations in the heart of Nuseirat.

The four hostages were kidnapped by Hamas from the Nova music festival and held hostage for the last eight months.

Argamani’s chilling video of being kidnapped by terrorists on a motorbike during the horrifying attacks had generated massive criticism from all over the world.

In the first images released by the country’s defence forces after the rescue operation on Saturday, Argamani is seen meeting her father in an emotional reunion.

“They are in good medical condition and have been transferred to the ‘Sheba’ Tel-HaShomer Medical Centre for further medical examinations. We will continue to make every effort to bring the hostages home,” the IDF said in a statement.

Cologne, June 8 (IANS/DPA) German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has praised the European Union as a guarantor of peace and freedom.

“This great good fortune of the European Union did not fall from the sky for us Germans,” Baerbock said on Friday evening at an election campaign event organized by the Greens for the European elections in Cologne.

Other countries had forgiven Germany after World War II and given it new confidence; The European Union had been built on this, the minister said. Now everything must be done to ensure that the people of Ukraine can one day live in peace and freedom again, she added.

Support for Ukraine is not in contradiction to peace talks, on the contrary, it is a prerequisite for them, Baerbock said to strong applause in the Ehrenfeld district, one of the largest Green strongholds in Germany.

Green Party Chairwoman Ricarda Lang pointed out that, according to initial forecasts, the European elections in the Netherlands had been won by an alliance of Greens and Social Democrats. The radical right-wing party of populist Geert Wilders only came in second place.

Brussels, June 8 (IANS/DPA) Italy’s firebrand Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is polling well ahead of her rivals as Italians, Estonians, Latvians, Maltese, Czechs and Slovakians go to vote in the European Parliament elections on Saturday.

Meloni could be poised to act as kingmaker for the next European Commission president if her Brothers of Italy (FdI) makes major gains.

Incumbent Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been openly courting Meloni in the hope of winning the confirmatory votes of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, a pan-European soft-eurosceptic bloc that Meloni now leads and whose ranks FdI candidates aim to join if elected to the European Parliament.

As the EU’s third-most populous country, Italy can send a total of 76 delegates to the 720-seat European Parliament, putting anyone who wins big there in a powerful position at EU level.

According to a “poll of polls” compiled by the news website Politico, the conservative FdI is in first place with 27%, six points ahead of the centre-left Democratic Party.

Saturday marks the third day of four in the EU-wide elections, in which different countries vote on different days. It’s polling day for Latvia, Malta and Slovakia; the second and final day of polling for the Czech Republic, and the first of two for Italy and Estonia.

Slovakia’s left-wing nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico has come out fighting on Wednesday after surviving an assassination attempt on May 15 that shocked Europe. Fico was shot multiple times in an attack that appears to have been politically motivated.

The recovering prime minister published a video on Wednesday in which said “an activist of the Slovak opposition” had carried out the attempt on his life,” adding there was no reason to believe the attack was the act of a “lone lunatic.”

Fico’s party SMER is leading in the polls at 23%, two points ahead of the liberal Progressive Slovakia party.

The first preliminary results indicating the composition of the next European Parliament will only come late on Sunday night, after every member of the 27-nation bloc has voted. These will be updated during the early hours of Monday.
