Nvidia surpasses Apple to become world’s largest company in AI era

0

San Francisco, Nov 6 (IANS) Graphics chip giant Nvidia has become the world’s largest company by market capitalisation, surpassing Apple, in the artificial intelligence (AI) era.

Nvidia was valued at $3.43 trillion at the close of market late on Tuesday, crossing Apple’s $3.38 trillion market value.

Jensen Huang-led Nvidia for the first time pushed past Apple in June, though only for a day.

The company’s stock rose 2.9 per cent to $139.93, resulting in a market capitalisation of $3.43 trillion. The chipmaker now accounts for 7 per cent of the weight of the S&P 500 Index.

Microsoft currently has a market cap of $3.06 trillion.

In its second quarter ended July 28, Nvidia reported revenue of $30 billion, up 15 per cent from the previous quarter and up 122 per cent from a year ago.

“Hopper demand remains strong, and the anticipation for Blackwell is incredible,” said Huang. “Nvidia achieved record revenues as global data centers are in full throttle to modernise the entire computing stack with accelerated computing and generative AI.”

During the first half of fiscal 2025, the chipmaker returned $15.4 billion to shareholders in the form of shares repurchased and cash dividends. As of the end of the second quarter, the company had $7.5 billion remaining under its share repurchase authorisation.

The company’s outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2025 predicts revenue to be $32.5 billion, plus or minus 2 per cent.

Nvidia will host a conference call on November 20 to discuss its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, which ended October 27.

Ahead of the call, it will provide written commentary on its third-quarter results from its chief financial officer, Colette Kress.

Meanwhile, Huang has asked SK hynix to deliver its next-generation high bandwidth memory (HBM), named HBM4, six months earlier than scheduled amid rising demand for AI computing chips.

Huang’s request highlighted the soaring demand for Nvidia’s AI accelerators, which heavily rely on HBM chips for data and energy-intensive tasks as AI technology advances beyond text-based models.

India’s B2B2C mental health market likely to reach $3.9 billion by FY29

0

New Delhi, Nov 6 (IANS) Driven by the rise in digital adoption, the enterprise-driven business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C) mental health market in India is projected to reach approximately $3.9 billion by FY29, with demand expected to grow 1.7 times in the coming years, according to a new report.

Corporate and educational segments are leading this shift, recognising the critical role of mental health in productivity and educational success, according to the report from market research firm Redseer.

“Currently, over 200 million people in India face mental health conditions, yet only 10-15 per cent seek professional help. The gap highlights the need for scalable, accessible solutions — a need that is being met with innovative, digital-first approaches,” said Jasbir Juneja from Redseer.

To address the wide-ranging needs of India’s mental health market, B2C services have been steadily growing. The B2C is projected to expand 1.4 times by FY29, driven by heightened awareness, particularly among parents concerned about neurodevelopmental disorders, which affect brain development and function.

With around 2.9 to 3.2 million children affected by these conditions, offline counselling and neurodevelopment centres are expected to play a crucial role in the future, Juneja noted.

In the educational sector, institutions are integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) programmes aimed at building empathy, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills in students.

“The SEL segment within educational institutions is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16 per cent from FY24 to FY29, reflecting a rising commitment to mental health awareness in schools and colleges,” the report noted.

Nearly 15 per cent of the Indian population faces mental health conditions, from anxiety to neuro-developmental disorders, creating substantial economic impacts.

The WHO estimates a potential productivity loss of $1 trillion globally every year due to untreated mental health conditions.

As per the National Health and Morbidity Survey, India has a 70-90 per cent treatment gap for various disorders, with only 0.9 psychiatrists and psychologists per 100,000 people in 2023, based on Redseer’s estimate.

“However, the government’s recent initiatives, such as the National Tele Mental Health Programme, are helping bridge this gap, handling over 1.45 million calls through Tele MANAS by 2024,” said the report.

Superbug-killing virus discovered in Australian creek

0

Sydney, Nov 6 (IANS) Australian scientists have discovered a new virus capable of killing a superbug in a Melbourne waterway, according to a new study published on Wednesday.

Researchers from Monash University discovered two versions of a previously-unknown bacteriophage, a virus that kills bacteria, in the Merri Creek, a waterway that flows through Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

They found that the new bacteriophage can kill the antibiotic-resistant superbug Klebsiella that is commonly found in hospitals.

The research was conducted in collaboration with a local Aboriginal cultural heritage corporation and the bacteriophage was named by Aboriginal elders Merri-merri-uth nyilam marra-natj (MMNM), which translates as “Dangerous Merri lurker” in English.

Trevor Lithgow, leader of the research from the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, said the research found that a single genetic difference between the two versions of MMNM changed how effectively they kill bacteria. The sequence variation was then subject to further evolution in laboratory conditions, Xinhua news agency reported.

“All of the various new phages that we evolved can kill Klebsiella, but some of the variant phages kill better than others,” Lithgow said. “The finding gives hope that there are as yet undiscovered natural phage populations that have untapped genetic variations that can be leveraged into new ways to kill antibiotic resistance bacterium.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified antimicrobial resistant superbugs — bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi that have developed a resistance to one or more of the antibiotics used to treat them — as a top global public health threat.

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention in February reported a significant increase in the number of cases of a hypervirulent strain of Klebsiella and that the cases were resistant to antibiotics used as a last resort to treat bacterial infections.

Israeli military says killed senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon

0

Jerusalem, Nov 6 (IANS) Israeli warplanes struck Lebanon on Wednesday, killing Hussain Abd Al-Haleem Harb, Hezbollah’s commander in the Khiam region, Israel’s military reported.

In a statement, the military said Harb “directed and executed many rocket attacks against communities in the Galilee, and against the area of Metula specifically”.

Over the past 24 hours, the Israeli Air Force has conducted around 70 strikes in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, according to military figures.

In Lebanon, ground forces coordinated aerial strikes that killed “a number” of Hezbollah fighters, while in Gaza, Israeli soldiers reportedly killed “dozens” of individuals the military identified as militants.
