The Indian physicist who discovered how stars live and die while on a ship voyage

0

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) It was a cosmic conundrum that had left the world’s foremost physicist puzzled, while a leading astronomer’s efforts to help him complicated matters further, but this teenage Indian student, using just pen and paper, devised a solution to the issue while sailing to the UK in 1930 to take up a scholarship to study physics.

The issue was of the life — and death — of stars, and led to the development of the concept of black holes, long before their existence was confirmed by observation. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, who would go on to become a prominent theoretical physicist and a Nobel Laureate, was among those involved in determining the fate of the celestial bodies across the universe — when their internal reactions come to a halt.

The issue arose when Albert Einstein formulated his Theory of General Relativity, his geometric construct of the fundamental force of gravitation, refining Isaac Newton’s laws of gravity. However, he was not able to reconcile the field equations with the theory’s mathematical implications. Reading his published papers in 1915 in a trench on the Eastern Front amid World War 1, astronomer Karl Schwarzchild sought to help his colleague — ending with the unsettling idea that the universe did not run in a clockwork fashion, as long believed, but more severely with stars and planets warping spacetime. There could also be some stars, tiny but massively dense, he contended, that could warp the spacetime fabric to such an extent of generating a strong gravitational pull that could even prevent light from escaping.

Schwarzchild’s theory, which postulated the theoretical possibility of a “singularity”, a point of all-powerful spacetime due to a minute but hugely dense mass, languished for years as it seemed too outlandish for the scientists of the time.

Chandrasekhar (1910-95), born on this day (October 19) in Lahore, would go on to solve the issue, though established scientists — including some he looked up to — disputed and scorned his theory, but he would be finally vindicated. In the process, he would not achieve fame in this world only, but his name would go on to be associated with happenings spanning the sub-atomic world to the infinite cosmic expanse.

On his ship voyage in July 1930, Chandrasekhar had no interest in the majestic oceans but chose to dwell on the question of a star’s fate. This did not entail the observation of the heavens, but going deep into the equations of Einstein and Schwarzchild, amid the current knowledge about white dwarfs – the extinguished but dense remnants of long-dead stars.

Beginning with their physical characteristics, he began to try to work out the eventual fate of different-sized stars after their collapse. While the Sun would collapse and turn into a white dwarf, things changed dramatically when it came to bigger stars. His calculations suggested that during their collapse, the immense gravitational force would lead to their atoms falling inwards at velocities nearing the speed of light, crushing each other irredeemably to the extent that matter would vanish into its own gravitational well!

This, Chandrasekhar held, would be the fate of any star whose mass was 1.44 times that of the Sun.

He published his model in 1930, and presented a full solution at the Royal Astronomical Society meeting in 1935. However, renowned English astronomer Arthur Eddington openly criticised and mocked Chandrasekhar’s models, including just after his Royal Astronomical Society speech. Years later, Chandrasekhar, who always respected his senior colleague despite their academic acrimony, confessed that Eddington felt “that nature must conform to what he thought was right.”

Chandrasekhar’s theory eventually gained acceptance, leading to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983, “for his theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars.”

He was not only among the handful of Indian or Indian-origin Nobel Laureates, but also the relative of an earlier winner. Sir C. V. Raman, who won the Physics Nobel in 1930, was his paternal uncle. While there are seven cases of father and son Nobel Laureates and one mother and daughter, Sir C. V. and Chandrasekhar are the only uncle-nephew pair.

Chandrasekhar would go on to recite India’s first Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore’s “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high..” at the Nobel Banquet.

His name also lives on in the star stability — which also became supporting evidence for the existence of black holes — and is known as the “Chandrasekhar Limit”, as well as in Chandrasekhar Friction, Chandrasekhar Polarisation, Chandrasekhar’s H-function, Velikhov–Chandrasekhar instability, Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, Chandrasekhar Tensor, Chandrasekhar’s X- and Y-function, Chandrasekhar’s Variational Principle and several others, given his contribution to other areas of physics.

And then, the third of NASA’s four space-based “Great Observatories” was named after him and is still scanning the cosmos.

Sudan, South Sudan discuss resumption of oil transportation

0

Khartoum, Oct 21 (IANS) Sudan and South Sudan stressed the need to address the obstacles facing the resumption of South Sudan’s oil exports via the Sudanese territory.

This came after Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council and General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan met on Sunday with South Sudan’s Presidential Advisor on National Security Tut Gatluak in Port Sudan, the capital city of the Red Sea State in eastern Sudan, Xinhua news agency reported.

“All technical teams in the two countries are ready to increase production and ensure the flow of oil through the Sudanese port of Bashayer,” Gatluak said in a statement, highlighting South Sudan’s readiness to implement what was agreed upon with the Sudanese government.

A meeting between the two countries’ ministries of energy and petroleum is expected in this regard, Gatluak said, noting that “oil is a lifeline for the people of both countries.”

In March, the Sudanese government announced the suspension of South Sudan’s oil exports through Sudanese territories due to a fault in the transportation lines.

According to the Sudanese authorities, the fault was a result of a blockage in an underground pipeline, situated in the north of Sudan’s White Nile State, an area controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The meeting followed a previous one in early June.

Oil exports constitute the main source of South Sudan’s national revenue, and the country heavily depends on Sudan, its northern neighbour, to transport oil to international markets.

Sudan has been ravaged by a deadly conflict between the SAF and the RSF since mid-April 2023. According to a situation report issued by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project on October 14, the deadly conflict has resulted in more than 24,850 deaths.

Former British PM Cameron backs India’s bid for permanent seat at UNSC

0

New Delhi, Oct 21 (IANS) Former British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday joined several global leaders who are batting strongly for India getting a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), insisting that the world needs to hear India’s perspective on several major challenges.

“We do need a reset. The world has changed hugely since the institutions were set up after the Second World War. It is time for a reset because you see the rise of India which will become the world’s largest economy at some stage in this century and countries like India should be at its heart,” Cameron said while speaking at the two-day NDTV World Summit which kicked off in New Delhi on Monday.

Cameron, who spoke just after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘NDTV World Summit 2024 – The India Century’, said that he was an “early believer” in the “India Century”.

“We do need a reform of the United Nations Security Council. I made this argument as far back as 2005 when I became a leader of the Conservative Party and India was the first country I visited outside Europe. When I became PM, India was the first country I visited outside Europe in 2010… Obviously, a permanent seat in the UN Security Council is something that should be India’s right in this changed world,” he said.

While the world decides on UN reforms, Cameron – the British PM from May 2010 until July 2016 and Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs between November 2023 and July 2024 – hailed India’s growing prowess globally.

“Good to see India takes its place in more informal global institutions like the Quad, its role in the G20 – India is invited almost as a standing member of the G7 now. These are all good moves because we need India’s perspective on these challenges that we face in our world,” he mentioned.

Earlier, PM Modi launched ‘NDTV World’ – the new channel from the NDTV stable – as he inaugurated the NDTV World Summit where he laid out his vision for a developed India by 2047.

During his address, Prime Minister Modi pointed out that, even as the world is battling several major issues, India is discussing the ‘The Indian Century’ right now.

“In the midst of global instability, India is a ray of hope. It is not that we are not affected by global concerns, but there is a sense of positivity that we feel in India. India has emerged as a beacon of hope,” he stated.

Following Prime Minister Modi and Cameron, Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay, Barbados PM Mia Mottley, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and several other noted personalities from all walks of life will be addressing and discussing key global issues at the key summit.

How Shammi Kapoor indigenised James Dean and Elvis, danced with the (Indian) Beatles

0

Can you imagine the dapper Dev Anand singing ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, or yelling ‘Yahoo’ as he dares ‘Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe’, or serenading the ‘O Haseena Zulfonwali’? All these films — ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha’ (1957), ‘Junglee’ (1961), and ‘Teesri Manzil’ — were conceived for him but he rejected them for various reasons, paving the way for a new star.Shammi Kapoor filled the breach — and went on to create a new hero archetype and film genre of the pure entertainment musical romance.

After 18 successive flops and one average performance, he was ready to give up the Hindi film industry and become a tea plantation manager in Assam. However, a radical re-invention of his image, drawing on youth icons James Dean and Elvis Presley — though suitably indigenised, aided by Dev Anand’s triple reluctance, set him on the road to success.

A scion of the illustrious Kapoor family, films were an automatic choice for Shamsher Raj ‘Shammi’ Kapoor (1931-2011), who was born on this day (October 21) in Bombay. However, he did not find his initial going in the film world easy — most of the heroines considered him a ‘baccha’, having worked already with either his father, Prithviraj Kapoor or his elder brother, Raj Kapoor, and most filmmakers considered him a “clone” of his elder brother.

In the wake of his string of failures, whatever the genre — tragic and historical romances, comedies, thrillers or costumed dramas with top actresses like Suraiya, Madhubala, (future wife) Geeta Bali, and Meena Kumari across most of the 1950s, he understood that he needed to devise his own special, game-changing persona. Shammi Kapoor confessed, as per Rauf Ahmed’s biography that he never liked the existing model of the Hindi film hero, whom he felt was too submissive and defeatist and would give up the love of his life under paternal or family pressure and sing sad songs outside her house.

Circumstances made him the harbinger of change — a flamboyantly self-confident, outspoken, and even cocky, figure, with an easygoing approach to life, and not hesitating in enjoying it without hangups. It came as a refreshing foil to the meek persona, cultivated by Raj Kapoor, in his Chaplin-like tramp roles, or the brooding and tragic intensity of Dilip Kumar, and was way ahead of the jaunty Dev Anand, who could never reach that level of uninhibited exuberance.

Dev Anand’s rejection of ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha’, where he termed the hero “not his type”, as well as the other films, gave Shammi Kapoor the opportunity and he did not let it for over a decade. However, in a gentlemanly gesture, when approached for these roles, he reached out to Dev Anand and confirmed his denial before accepting.

Shammi Kapoor proved that ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekhha’ was no fluke, with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ (1959), and then ‘Junglee’ (1961) — where his full-throated ‘Yahoo’ became iconic (incidentally, neither the actor nor singer Mohammad Rafi, but writer and later director Prayag Raj yelled it out).

‘Professor’, ‘China Town’ (both 1962), ‘Bluff Master’ (1963), ‘Rajkumar’, ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ (1964), ‘Janwar’ (1965) — where not only did ‘Dekho Ab To Kisi Ko Nahi Hai Khabar’ reprise the tune of the Beatles’ ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ but also had a set of Indian Beatles impersonators belt it out, ‘Budtameez’ (1966), ‘An Evening in Paris’ (1967), ‘Brahmachari’ (1968), ‘Tumse Achha Kaun Hai’, and ‘Prince’ (both 1969) went to mark his legacy in the Indian films pantheon, with his dancing and emoting.

In the process, Shammi Kapoor became a gold standard for the dancing Bollywood hero, with several generations spanning Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, Govinda, Shah Rukh Khan, and his own great-grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor, following in his footsteps, or rather, jives

However, after an over-decade-long reign as the jiving romantic hero — with all his dancing self-choreographed, he gauged that it was time to yield to the new generation, especially after ‘Andaz’ (1971), where Rajesh Khanna stole the show with his 15-minute cameo — including ‘Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana’ over his more nuanced role.

A bulkier and bearded Shammi Kapoor switched to mature character roles like tavern-owner Dhoop Chaaon in ‘Manoranjan’ (1974) — the remake of Shirley MacLaine’s ‘Irma La Douce’ he directed himself, Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna’s foster-father in ‘Parvarish’ (1977), the fake holy man, Dr Dubari in ‘Shalimar’ (1978), the Sisodia Maharaja in ‘Meera’ (1979), the dance judge in Sanjay Dutt’s debut ‘Rocky’ (1981), engine driver — and Dilip Kumar’s colleague — Gurbaksh in ‘Vidhaata’ (1982), down to the music ustad in his great-grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Rockstar’ (2011) – released a couple of months after his demise.

As a biography of the Kapoor family held, his elder brother had founded an institution, but Shammi Kapoor became one himself, as Bollywood’s most irrepressible prototype of the “Swinging Sixties”.

Naga Vamsi Clarifies Remarks on Sankranthi Releases

0

Naga Vamsi, the head of Sithara Entertainments, recently found himself at the center of a media storm following comments he made about the upcoming Sankranthi season. His assertion that there would be no tough competition for the festival sparked a flurry of reactions, particularly among passionate Mega fans.

During subsequent media interactions, Vamsi clarified that his comments had been misconstrued. He emphasized that there would be only three releases, not six, for Sankranthi 2025. Vamsi acknowledged the miscommunication that led to fan wars on social media, stating that his intention was merely to express confidence in a balanced release schedule, rather than undermine the significance of any specific film, including Ram Charan’s highly anticipated “Game Changer.”

Vamsi reiterated his desire to collaborate with Ram Charan in the future, showcasing his commitment to fostering positive relationships in the industry. He urged fans to understand the context of his statements and avoid engaging in social media skirmishes. With his upcoming film, “Lucky Baskhar,” set to hit screens on October 31st, Vamsi remains focused on delivering quality entertainment rather than engaging in unnecessary controversies.

As the industry prepares for the Sankranthi festivities, the initial frenzy surrounding the release schedule has subsided. While the excitement for the upcoming films remains high, it appears that the only clash this Sankranthi may be between viewers over which film to watch first.
