Box Office: How Did Kanguva Start?
Suriya’s big money action adventure Kanguva hit the big screens on the 14th of this month and it has opened on a mediocre note at the box office. The early box office reports have projected an ordinary trend for the film.
The box office reports are claiming that Kanguva has opened on a mediocre note at the ticket counters.
These are the numbers that are in circulation for the film now and this is more or less the final box office projection. The film has opened fairly well in Tamil, and moderately well in Telugu. The Hindi openings are dull but that is acceptable.
Considering the fact that a lot is at stake for Kanguva, it has to be seen where the film will end up at the global box office.
Chiru, Mahesh, Prabhas.. ‘big’ support system for small films!
In the vibrant world of Tollywood, the discussion about whether celebrities do enough to support smaller films has recently taken center stage. Actor Rakesh Varre brought the issue into the limelight by expressing his dissatisfaction at a event, highlighting how challenging it is to garner celebrity endorsements for smaller film events, with many not even responding to invitations. This statement sparked a debate, drawing varied opinions from within the industry and among fans on social media platforms.
On the other of the argument, renowned producer Dil Raju offered a different perspective, suggesting that celebrities are often caught up in their own hectic schedules and commitments. According to him, if their time allows, they do make an appearance at such events, indicating that it’s more about timing than a lack of willingness to support. This back-and-forth has opened up a broader conversation about the dynamics of support within the film industry, especially when it comes to films with smaller budgets and lesser-known casts.
Many top actors in Tollywood have a history of supporting smaller films in various ways. For instance, the esteemed Chiranjeevi has made appearances at events like the trailer launch of ‘Zebra’ starring Satyadev, asserting that he’s always ready to lend his presence if invited with warmth and affection. Similarly, Mahesh Babu is known to use his Twitter platform to praise films that catch his eye, helping to boost their visibility irrespective of their size.
The role of social media in promoting films has been embraced by stars like Prabhas, who shares teasers and trailers of films he enjoys, predominantly through Instagram. Allu Arjun, Naga Chaitanya, and Nani are among others who actively engage with and promote smaller projects, demonstrating a willingness to support the broader industry beyond their own filmography. Whether it’s hosting the team at their home, attending pre-release functions, or simply using their social media influence, these gestures signify a form of encouragement that can significantly impact a film’s reach and success.
Rana Daggubati stands out as a monumental figure in this aspect, often going the extra mile to assist small films behind the scenes. His efforts to support struggling filmmakers, including managing promotions and even making personal appearances, underscore the potential impact of star power on smaller projects. Sandeep Kishan’s recount of offering Rana’s contact as a lifeline for promotion highlights the pivotal role such support plays in the industry.
However, the feasibility of securing such celebrity endorsements remains a challenge for many filmmakers. The industry’s dynamics often mean that only projects with certain familiar faces or directors manage to attract big names for their promotions. While scheduling conflicts and practical limitations are understandable, the debate underscores a larger issue of accessibility and the collective responsibility towards nurturing diverse storytelling within Tollywood. The undeniable benefit of celebrity support for small films lies in the promotional boost and increased audience reach it provides.
In an era dominated by OTT platforms, drawing audiences to theaters requires more than just quality content; it demands visibility and buzz, often generated through star-studded endorsements. As the industry grapples with balancing the scales between blockbuster hits and smaller ventures, the importance of such support cannot be overstated. Despite the challenges, the notion that ‘small films are dying’ due to lack of support is countered by the argument that it’s these very films that keep theaters alive beyond the sporadic releases of big-ticket movies.
The industry’s sustainability and growth are reliant on the success of films across the spectrum. Echoing the sentiments of Megastar Chiranjeevi, the prosperity of the film industry hinges not just on the triumphs of major releases but on the collective success of all films, big and small alike.
AI Dubbing Fails to Capture Murthy’s Magic in Kanguva
Surya, a beloved Tamil actor known for his engaging performances, recently ventured into a new domain with his latest film “Kanguva,” a pan-India fantasy action flick directed by Siva. In a groundbreaking move for the actor, Surya attempted to dub his voice in Telugu for the first time. The film, which features Surya in a dual role, opened in theaters this Thursday to high anticipation but received mixed reactions from the audience, particularly regarding its Telugu dubbing.
The innovative approach of using artificial intelligence (AI) for dubbing Surya’s voice in the Telugu version has sparked a wave of disappointment among Telugu cinema enthusiasts. Despite Surya’s efforts to dub in Tamil, the AI technology altered his voice for the Telugu and other language versions. This application of AI in dubbing marks a first in the Kollywood industry, but it has not been well-received, with many fans expressing their dissatisfaction over the lack of authenticity in the voice modulation.
Historically, Surya’s characters have resonated deeply with Telugu audiences, thanks in part to the dubbing talents of Srinivasa Murthy. Murthy’s distinctive base tone, especially in the “Singam” series, and his ability to bring variation to his voice, significantly contributed to the success and appeal of Surya’s roles in various films. The combination of Murthy’s voice and Surya’s performances made for memorable characters, establishing a strong connection between Surya and the Telugu audience.
The unfortunate passing of Srinivasa Murthy in January 2023 due to a heart attack left a void in the industry. Surya himself acknowledged the irreplaceable nature of Murthy’s contribution, highlighting how his voice added depth and emotion to his characters. Following Murthy’s demise, Surya explored alternatives for dubbing but struggled to replicate the same connection with the audience. Though Tollywood actor Satyadev provided his voice for Surya in “Aakasham Nee Haddura” and was praised for his performance, he did not pursue dubbing for other actors, leading to the selection of different dubbing artists for films like “Jai Bheem” and “ET.”
The absence of Srinivasa Murthy’s voice has been particularly noted in “Kanguva,” with many fans arguing that a voice as powerful and evocative as Murthy’s would have been ideal for the film’s epic dialogues. The AI-assisted dubbing has been criticized for sounding unnatural, reminiscent of an English film’s dubbing, lacking the impact and authenticity Murthy’s voice brought to Surya’s characters. This sentiment reflects the challenge of capturing the essence and emotional depth of performances through technology, underscoring the unique and irreplaceable role of human talent in cinematic storytelling.

Vineet Kumar Singh-starrer ‘Match Fixing’ to now release on Jan 17
The upcoming movie ‘Match Fixing’, which stars Vineet Kumar Singh, is set to release in theatres on January 17, 2025.
The film was originally scheduled for November 15. However, it’s release has been delayed due to legal cases. One of them was a petition filed in the NIA court by an individual involved in the Malegaon Blast case who raised concerns that the film might influence perceptions of his ongoing trial.
In response, the makers of the film clarified that the film is not related to the Malegaon case at all. The producer clarified that the film draws inspiration from the book ‘The Game Behind Saffron Terror’ authored by retired Colonel Kanwar Khatana, published in the year 2020.
The book explores a narrative of alleged political conspiracies and cross-border intrigue involving intelligence agencies of India and Pakistan.
Producer of the film, Pallavi Gurjar said in a statement, “This film isn’t about the Malegaon case. It’s a broader look at a series of attacks in the early 2000s and the potential political dynamics shaping public perception. We respect the judicial process and have taken care to ensure that this film does not interfere with the Malegaon case currently before the court”.
Director Kedaar Gaekwad shared, “Ideating and executing this project has been very challenging for our team. We have approached the subject with both responsibility and sensitivity without taking unnecessary creative liberties”.
As per Kedaar, the film aims to offer a fresh perspective on the narrative around terrorism in India, tracing a series of events that culminated in the tragic and dastardly 26/11 terror attacks, which is one of the bloodiest terror attacks in modern history.
The film also stars Anuja Sathe and Manoj Joshi.
It is produced by Pallavi Gurjar under Artarena Creations Private Limited.

India’s CO2 emissions account 8pc of global total, to rise by 4.6pc in 2024
New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) India accounts for per cent of the global total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and it is expected to increase by 4.6 per cent in 2024, according to a new report released on Wednesday, ahead of the UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The report by Global Carbon Project, involving an international team of more than 120 scientists, showed that global carbon emissions from fossil fuels have reached a record high in 2024 — 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, up 0.8 per cent from 2023 levels.
The report led by the University of Exeter showed “there is ‘no sign’ that the world has reached a peak in fossil CO2 emissions”. This is despite the urgent need to cut emissions to slow climate change.
It showed that emissions from coal are expected to rise by 0.2 per cent; oil by 0.9 per cent; and gas by 2.4 per cent.
China’s emissions — which account for 32 per cent of the global total — are projected to marginally increase by 0.2 per cent, while US emissions (which account for 13 per cent of the global total) are projected to decrease by 0.6 per cent.
Notably, emissions from the European Union (accounting for 7 per cent of the global total) will decrease by 3.8 per cent.
Emissions in the rest of the world (accounting for 38 per cent of the global total) are projected to increase by 1.1 per cent, said the report, published in the journal Earth System Science Data.
Currently, more than 40 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions are released each year. This is increasing the level of CO2 in the atmosphere — driving increasingly dangerous global warming.
“Time is running out to meet the Paris Agreement goals,” said Professor Pierre Friedlingstein, from the University of Exeter’s Global Systems Institute, who led the study.
He called on world leaders meeting at the upcoming COP29 to “bring about rapid and deep cuts to fossil fuel emissions”, which will help the world to stay well below 2 degrees Celsius warming above pre-industrial levels.
This study estimates the remaining “carbon budget” before the 1.5 degrees Celsius target is breached consistently over multiple years, not just for a single year. At the current rate of emissions, the Global Carbon Budget team estimates a 50 per cent chance global warming will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius consistently in about six years.
