India sends 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid to floods-hit Nigeria

India sent 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Nigeria on Thursday to assist the west African country in dealing with the impact of devastating floods that left hundreds of people dead.In addition to this, India also announced another 60 tonnes of assistance to the African nation.

Taking to X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “Committed to Humanitarian Assistance. India dispatched 15 tonnes of aid to Nigeria to provide support to those affected by the devastating floods in the country. A further assistance of 60 tonnes of aid will be sent in due course.”

“The aid comprises food, sleeping mats, blankets, water purification supplies and other relief items,” the MEA post added.

At least 321 people have been killed and over 740,000 others displaced in Nigeria so far this year due to the floods that ravaged most parts of the country.

In addition, some 2,854 people have been injured in the flooding, caused mainly by prolonged rainfall across the most populous African country, said Chukwuma Soludo, Governor of the southeastern state of Anambra, after a monthly National Economic Council meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“The country is facing a national emergency concerning flooding and the reports so far identify a major national disaster,” as the rains have led to widespread displacement, loss of lives, and destruction of homes and livelihoods, Soludo had said, citing briefings at the Economic Council meeting.

The senior official had also mentioned that 34 out of Nigeria’s 36 states have experienced flooding, and 217 out of the 774 local government areas in the country have been affected. The ravaging flood has displaced at least 740,743 people and destroyed or affected 281,000 houses and 258,000 cultivated farmlands.

Additionally, the UN agencies appealed for lifesaving support in Nigeria, where record inflation, climate shocks, and ongoing conflicts are projected to push the number of food-insecure people to 33 million in 2025.

Canada confirms first domestically acquired human case of H5N1 bird flu

Ottawa, Nov 14 (IANS) The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) confirmed the first domestically acquired human case of H5N1 avian influenza in Canada.

A teenager in British Columbia was hospitalised and tested presumptive positive for H5 avian influenza on November 9, and was later confirmed to have been infected with the H5N1 virus on Wednesday, PHAC said in a statement.

The genomic sequencing result indicated that the virus is related to the avian influenza H5N1 virus from the ongoing outbreak in poultry in British Columbia, said PHAC, adding that no other human infections have been detected so far, and investigation is underway to determine how the individual got infected.

While there is an ongoing H5N1 outbreak in dairy cattle in the United States, no cases of avian influenza have been reported in dairy cattle in Canada, and there has been no evidence of bird flu virus in milk samples, reports Xinhua news agency.

Furthermore, the clade of H5N1 virus detected in dairy cattle in the United States differed from that found in the human case reported in British Columbia, PHAC said.

Based on current evidence, the risk of avian influenza infection for the public remains low. The risk of bird flu infection is higher for those who have unprotected exposure to infected animals, PHAC said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a leader to have received a record number of civilian honours — amounting to 14 — from numerous countries, highlighting his leadership and India’s growing stature on the global stage.

These awards signify strengthened diplomatic relationships and reflect India’s expanding influence and engagement worldwide.

In April 2016, during his visit to Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian honour, the King Abdulaziz Sash. The prestigious award was presented by King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

Later in 2016, PM Modi was awarded Afghanistan’s highest civilian honour, the State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan.

In 2018, during a historic visit to Palestine, Prime Minister Modi was honoured with the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine Award, Palestine’s highest recognition for foreign dignitaries.

In 2019, the Prime Minister received the UAE’s highest civilian honour, the Order of Zayed Award, as a testament to the close India-UAE relations.

Russia also conferred Prime Minister Modi with its highest civilian honour, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, in 2019, recognising his efforts to strengthen India-Russia ties. PM Modi received the award during his visit to Moscow in July 2024.

In 2019, the Maldives presented PM Modi with the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddin, the country’s highest honour for foreign dignitaries.

In the same year, PM Modi was also honoured with Bahrain’s King Hamad Order of the Renaissance, highlighting the growing India-Bahrain relationship.

The United States conferred PM Modi with the Legion of Merit in 2020, an honour awarded by the US Armed Forces for exceptional service and achievements.

Bhutan recognised PM Modi with its highest civilian decoration, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, in December 2021. The award was presented during his visit to Bhutan in March 2024.

In 2023, during his visit to Papua New Guinea, PM Modi was awarded the Ebakl Award by President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. of the Republic of Palau.

Fiji honoured PM Modi with the Companion of the Order of Fiji, the highest honour in the country, recognising his global leadership. The award was presented by PM Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji.

Additionally, the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, Sir Bob Dadae, conferred PM Modi with the Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu, Papua New Guinea’s highest honour.

In June 2023, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi conferred the ‘Order of Nile’ on Prime Minister Modi, Egypt’s highest state honour.

On July 13, 2023, France awarded PM Modi the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest award, in a ceremony led by President Emmanuel Macron.

On August 25, 2023, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou honoured PM Modi with the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour, the second-highest civilian honour of Greece.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Africa in November 2024, Dominica has announced it will bestow upon him its highest national award, the Dominica Award of Honour.

In addition to these highest civilian honours, PM Modi has received several prestigious awards from renowned global organisations.

In 2018, he was awarded the Seoul Peace Prize by the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation, in recognition of his contributions to global harmony and world peace.

In the same year, the United Nations honoured PM Modi with its highest environmental accolade, the Champions of The Earth Award, for his bold environmental leadership.

In 2019, PM Modi received the first-ever Philip Kotler Presidential Award, which is annually awarded to leaders who demonstrate outstanding national leadership.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded PM Modi the Global Goalkeeper Award in 2019, in recognition of his efforts to transform India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan into a mass movement for cleanliness.

Television actress Sreejita De has tied the knot with her partner Michael Blohm-Pape in an intimate traditional Bengali ceremony in Goa.

On Thursday, the ‘Uttaran’ actress took to her Instagram to share pictures from her wedding, writing in the caption, “Cherished for life, taken forever…”

Sreejita and Blohm-Pape had previously exchanged vows in a Catholic ceremony in Germany last year. Prior to the wedding, the couple celebrated a series of pre-wedding ceremonies, including Mehendi, Haldi, and Sangeet.

Actress Soundarya Sharma is all set to make her Hollywood debut with “John Wick” series director Chad Stahelski.

The ‘Housefull 5’ actress is incredibly thrilled. Talking about her big debut, Soundarya shared, “I am incredibly thrilled. All I can say is, Dream on, dreams do come true. 2024 is incredibly special — it started with Housefull 5, all thanks to NGE and my ‘godsister’ Warda Nadiadwala, and now I’m trying and paving my way in Hollywood, which I’m really looking forward to. I had shot a few sequences almost a year ago for the same project, but I never like to talk much until it’s executed because I’m superstitious about it.”

She added, “I’m super excited to finish my last schedule in Los Angeles and France in January. I shot parts of it this year before my Housefull 5 schedule. Due to the NDA, I can’t share further details regarding this project, but I will soon, as per the ideal timeline.”

Joe: Retaliation”, “Immortals”, and many other massive Hollywood films.

Superstar Nayanthara, who made her Hindi cinema debut with the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer box-office juggernaut ‘Jawan’, has recollected how she and her husband, Vignesh Shivan fell in love.

The actress made the revelation in her streaming documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale’. On Thursday, the makers shared a clip from the documentary which shows the couple walking down the memory lane as they spoke about falling for each other.

Nayanthara said in the video “One day, all of a sudden, we were just doing one scene on the roads of Pondicherry. Since the roads and all were cleared and all that, I was just sitting on the road waiting for my shot. And Vicky was doing a shot with, I think, Vijay Sethupathi sir. And, you know, he was just doing his shot and all that”.

She further mentioned, “I don’t know, for some strange reason, all of a sudden, I looked at him, and I looked at him differently. The first thing that I thought was, he’s a cute guy. So, I found him cute, and then, the way he was explaining things, and the way he was just functioning as a director, that’s when I noticed him”.

Vignesh on his part said, “After the shoot was over, she said, ‘You know what to say, I miss being on set’. I told her, ‘Yes, I also miss being on set’. I won’t lie, any guy will check out a good looking girl, and compliment her in his mind. But, I never saw Nayan ma’am in that way”.

The actress added, “This is the first time I’m actually taking a step forward. And we kind of understood that we can talk, you know, in a different way”.

స్వామి రారా, కేశవ చిత్రాల తర్వాత యంగ్ హీరో నిఖిల్, డైరెక్టర్ సుధీర్ వర్మ కాంబోలో రీసెంట్ గా అప్పుడో ఇప్పుడో ఎప్పుడో మూవీ ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చిన విషయం తెలిసిందే. కానీ ఆ సినిమా షూటింగ్ ఎప్పుడు నిర్వహించారో ఎవరికీ తెలియదు. ఎలాంటి సౌండ్ లేకుండా మూవీ అప్డేట్ ఇచ్చి షాకిచ్చారు. ఆ తర్వాత రిలీజ్ డేట్ కూడా అనౌన్స్ చేశారు.

ప్రమోషన్స్ టైమ్ లో కరోనా సమయంలో షూట్ చేసినట్లు తెలిపారు. కట్ చేస్తే.. మూవీ ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చి ఫ్లాప్ టాక్ అందుకుంది. క్రైమ్ అండ్ లవ్ జోనర్ లో సుధీర్ మూవీని తెరకెక్కించారు. కానీ సినిమాలో ఎక్కడా క్రైమ్ థ్రిల్లర్ ఇచ్చే అనుభూతి కల్పించలేకపోయారు. అలా అని లవ్ స్టోరీని కూడా స్ట్రాంగ్ గా చూపించలేకపోయారు. అనేక మలుపులు, ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాకులు ఉన్నా.. ఆడియెన్స్ కు ఎక్కలేదు.

స్క్రీన్ ప్లే విషయంలో సుధీర్ వర్మ కాస్త కష్టపడినట్లు అనిపించినా.. ఆడియెన్స్ కు అస్సలు నచ్చలేదు మూవీ. మేకింగ్ చాలా పాత పద్ధతులకు చెందినట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. నిఖిల్ మాత్రం యాక్టింగ్ పరంగా న్యాయం చేశారు. తనకు అలవాటైన రోల్ లో కనిపించి మెప్పించారు. కానీ తలా తోకా లేని కథతో మూవీ ఉండడం వల్ల.. నిఖిల్ ఖాతాలో డిజాస్టర్ చేరింది.

అయితే అప్పుడో ఇప్పుడో ఎప్పుడో మూవీ విషయంలో నిఖిల్ ఒక తప్పు చేశారని నెటిజన్లు కామెంట్లు పెడుతున్నారు. గత ఏడాది ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చి ఫ్లాప్ గా మారిన స్పై మూవీ విషయంలో చేసిన తప్పే రెండోసారి చేశారని అంటున్నారు. అలా రెండేళ్ళలో రెండు డిజాస్టర్ లు అందుకున్నారని చెబుతున్నారు. కాస్త గట్టిగా ప్రమోషన్స్ చేసి ఉంటే కనీసం ఓపెనింగ్స్ బాగా వచ్చేవని అభిప్రాయపడుతున్నారు.

బ్లాక్ బస్టర్ హిట్ కార్తికేయ -2 మూవీ తర్వాత నిఖిల్ యాక్ట్ చేసిన స్పై.. పాన్ ఇండియా లెవెల్ లో విడుదల చేయాలనుకున్నారు. కానీ ఆ సమయంలో నిఖిల్ కు ప్రొడ్యూసర్ కు చిన్న డిస్టర్బేన్స్ వచ్చినట్లు వార్తలు వచ్చాయి. దీంతో నిఖిల్ కాస్త లేట్ గా ప్రమోషన్స్ లోకి ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చారు! దూకుడుగా ఆయన ప్రమోట్ చేసినప్పటికీ మూవీపై బజ్ పెద్దగా క్రియేట్ అవ్వలేదు. దీంతో కనీస వసూళ్లు కూడా రాబట్టలేదు.

ఇప్పుడు.. అప్పుడో ఇప్పుడో ఎప్పుడో విషయంలో ఏం జరిగిందో తెలియదు కానీ.. నిఖిల్ స్టార్టింగ్ లో ప్రమోషనల్ కార్యక్రమాల్లో కనిపించలేదు. కాస్త లేట్ గానే మూవీని ప్రమోట్ చేయడం స్టార్ట్ చేశారు. పలు మీడియాలకు ఇంటర్వ్యూస్ మాత్రమే ఇచ్చారు. వాటితో మూవీపై ఇంట్రెస్ట్ క్రియేట్ చేయలేకపోయారు. దీంతో ఆ మూవీ నిఖిల్ కెరీర్ లోనే లోయస్ట్ ఓపెనింగ్స్ సాధించింది. మరి కొత్త చిత్రాల విషయంలో నిఖిల్ మరోసారి ఈ తప్పును రిపీట్ చేయకపోతే చాలని నెటిజన్లు కామెంట్లు పెడుతున్నారు.

Kanguva OTT Partner Locked, But….

Suriya’s big budgeted action epic Kanguva opened in theaters today and it naturally drew a fair bit of anticipation in Tamil and Telugu alike. This is mostly due to the aggressive promotional campaign taken up by Suriya who extensively toured ahead of the release and promoted the film big time.

Coming to the OTT side of things, we are hearing an interesting report on Kanguva now and this has something to do with the OTT partner of the film.

Kanguva has apparently sealed Amazon Prime Video as its OTT streaming partner and it will be made available for streaming here in multiple languages.

But for those wondering when the film would stream on Amazon, just so that they can wait it out, there is some bad new.

Apparently, there is a lengthy theatrical window clause that is in place for the film, meaning that it won’t be streaming on Amazon Prime Video anytime soon. There will be a fair bit of delay in the OTT release of the film and it is likely to stream only from mid-January.

So, whoever is interested in the film is prompted to watch it in theaters only and not to wait out for the OTT debut which is still a fair way away.

Bihar: Youth found hanging in a garden in Vaishali

A 26-year-old was found hanging from a tree under mysterious circumstances in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Chakdadanpur village, under the jurisdiction of Mahua police station. The deceased, identified as Vinay Kumar, also known as Bhajan, is a local resident of the village.

According to Mahua SHO Rakesh Kumar, the police have begun an investigation, examining all possible angles, but have not yet determined the cause of the incident.

“The incident was discovered early on Thursday morning by a villager, who immediately notified the police. During their investigation at the scene, we have recovered items including a water bottle, a packet of chips, a disposable glass, and cigarette butts,” Kumar said.

“We cannot reach a conclusion at this point as the postmortem report has not come yet,” he said.

Notably, the victim, Vinay Kumar, was married just two years ago, adding to the family’s concerns.

Family members of the victim suspect foul play and have voiced concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police are continuing their inquiry, seeking to clarify the sequence of events and gather more evidence.

A family member of Vinay Kumar suggested that Vinay may have been having a gathering in the garden at the time of the incident.

The presence of used disposable glasses, a packet of chips, cigarettes, and other items at the scene indicates that Vinay may have been accompanied by others.

The family has urged the district police to conduct a thorough investigation and apprehend any individuals involved. Police officials are actively investigating the incident, gathering evidence to clarify whether others were present and involved in the events that led to Vinay’s death.

Earlier, a woman constable deployed at Musrigharari police station was found hanging in a bathroom in Bihar’s Samastipur police station on Tuesday. She was also a native of Vaishali district.

Imran Masood accuses BJP of divisive rhetoric ahead of Maha polls

Congress MP Imran Masood on Thursday accused the BJP of spreading divisive rhetoric ahead of the Maharashtra elections and remarked that all the hate slogans come from the BJP.

“We haven’t used any hate speech, we talk about love and progress. We don’t believe in dividing or creating rifts, instead, we focus on development. There hasn’t been a single provocative statement from our side. BJP resorts to these tactics when they have nothing else to offer,” said the Congress leader.

Earlier on Monday, the Congress accused the BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra of deliberately infusing “hate and poison” into its poll campaign and attempting to “disturb communal harmony in the state.”

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the campaign revealed the “sick mindset” of the BJP.

“The Mahayuti, led by the BJP, has only one agenda in its campaign. It is simply and only to polarize society on the basis of religion and to disturb communal harmony in the state. Such an awful campaign reveals its sick mindset,” Jairam Ramesh wrote in a post on X.

Commenting on Union Minister Giriraj Singh’s remarks that West Bengal is gradually becoming like Bangladesh, Imran Masood stated, “This is all they can talk about. After running the government for the last decade, they should focus on issues like inflation, unemployment, and farmers’ welfare. Instead, they try to distract from these pressing issues.”

“May God grant them the wisdom to address real challenges rather than inciting division,” he added.

Earlier in the day Union Minister Giriraj Singh had attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said, “West Bengal has become the capital of violence. The West Bengal government keeps the law in its pocket. The state government works for a particular community, the Muslims.”
