Recognising symptoms of sarcoma early may boost treatment outcomes: Experts
New Delhi, July 23 (IANS) Early recognition of sarcoma (rare cancer) symptoms can significantly improve treatment outcomes, increasing patients’ survival rates and quality of life, said experts on Tuesday.
July is recognised as sarcoma awareness month, dedicated to raising awareness about this rare and often overlooked group of cancers affecting connective tissues, including bones, muscles, and fat.
This year’s theme, ‘early diagnosis saves lives’, highlights the importance of early detection and advanced treatment options.
Sarcoma originate in bones and soft tissues such as muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, and fibrous tissues. They are categorised into bone sarcomas and soft tissue sarcomas, with the latter further divided into up to 100 types based on cell origin and genetic changes.
While sarcoma accounts for less than 1 per cent of adult cancers, their incidence rises to 10-15 per cent in children, with common types including Ewing’s sarcoma, osteogenic sarcoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma. However, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are used to control the disease, immunotherapy is being evaluated in multiple cancers and has shown promising results.
“The incidence in the adult population is less than 1 per cent while it reaches up to 10-15 per cent in children. The diagnosis of sarcoma is confirmed by biopsy of the swelling along with imaging- X-rays, CT scan, MRI and PET CT. Whenever detected at a later stage, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are used to control disease,” Sunil Chopade, Consultant Medical Oncology at Jaslok Hospital Mumbai told IANS.
He noted that immunotherapy has also shown promising results in treating multiple cancers.
Mayur Kamani, an Ortho-Oncology Surgeon at HCG Cancer Centre Ahmedabad, said, “Sarcomas can be present as painless lumps or swellings, and recognising these symptoms early is crucial.”

Scientists urge world leaders for unified approach to tackle climate, biodiversity crises
New Delhi, July 23 (IANS) Global scientists on Tuesday urged world leaders to develop a unified approach to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, warning that addressing these crises in isolation could hinder progress.
In a paper published in the Journal of Applied Ecology, they proposed a joint work programme between the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The researchers from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in the UK and York University, Canada, outlined the critical issues and offered recommendations for successful implementation.
“We urgently need a global approach that addresses the nature and climate crises together because they are intrinsically connected,” said Professor Nathalie Pettorelli, a researcher at ZSL’s Institute of Zoology.
The forthcoming Conferences of the Parties of the UNFCCC and CBD present an opportunity for world leaders to introduce a formal governance structure that integrates biodiversity and climate change agendas.
Professor Idil Boran, co-author, and researcher at York University’s Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, stressed the importance of a coordinated approach to avoid actions that could harm one crisis while addressing the other.
The paper calls for reallocating resources to address imbalances in funding and support for climate change and biodiversity loss, highlighting the need for nature-based solutions to tackle both crises simultaneously.
Two Japan MSDF helicopters found on seabed after April crash
Tokyo, July 23 (IANS) Japan’s Defence Ministry has announced that the two Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF) helicopters that crashed over the Pacific Ocean in April were found on the seabed.
MSDF officials announced on Monday that they had located the two SH-60K patrol helicopters in the Pacific and confirmed their identity based on registration numbers and their appearance on the seabed below the accident site, Xinhua news agency reported.
With the cooperation of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, the defence ministry has carried out its probe using an unmanned deep-sea vehicle capable of searching to a depth of 6,000 meters since July 15.
The waters around the site are about 5,500 meters deep, the MSDF said, adding it will consider the possibility of salvaging the helicopter wreckage to further the investigation.
On April 20, the two choppers, each carrying four MSDF members, collided during training off the shores of Torishima Island in the Izu Islands, south of Tokyo. One of the eight crew members was confirmed dead shortly after the accident.
In June, the MSDF declared the seven missing crewmen dead, while continuing its search efforts for their bodies.
South Korea’s People Power Party elects new leader
Seoul, July 23 (IANS) Han Dong-hoon, a former interim leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), was elected as new head of the embattled party without a runoff Tuesday as he won a majority of votes in the heated race.
Han won a whopping 62.8 per cent of the vote against runner-up former Land Minister Won Hee-ryong’s 18.8 per cent. Five-term lawmakers Representative Na Kyung-won and Representative Yoon Sang-hyun won 14.6 per cent and 3.7 per cent, respectively, Yonhap news agency reported.
Han’s win with a majority of the vote makes a runoff unnecessary.
President Yoon Suk Yeol showed up at the national convention held at the KINTEX exhibition center in Goyang, northwest of Seoul, for the second consecutive year. Last year marked the first time in seven years that the president had attended a national convention of the ruling party since former President Park Geun-hye did so in 2016.
During the convention, Yoon stressed the need for unity between the government and the PPP to push forward major agenda items despite challenges from the opposition-controlled National Assembly.
“The large opposition party is ignoring urgent livelihood issues and pressing economic policies, instead focusing on political strife. Although the 22nd National Assembly began two months ago, it effectively remains idle,” Yoon said in an address. “To overcome the situation, we need unified strength.”
The DP, which has a controlling majority of 170 seats in the 300-member Assembly, railroaded a contentious bill mandating a special counsel investigation into the military’s response to a Marine’s death, which was once again vetoed by Yoon earlier this month.
Tuesday’s election will fill a seven-month vacuum in the PPP’s formal leadership since Kim Gi-hyeon stepped down in December 2023. The ruling party has been led by an emergency committee since August 2022 after former party chairman Lee Jun-seok was removed as leader.
The PPP earlier revised its party rules to include public opinion polls in the election based on a weight of 20 per cent public opinion poll results and 80 per cent ballots cast by party members as part of efforts to better reflect public views after its bitter defeat in April.
Netanyahu meets families of Israeli-American hostages in Washington
New Delhi, July 23 (IANS) In what was his first meeting in the framework of the diplomatic visit to Washington, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the families of the Israeli-American hostages held in the custody of Hamas, earlier on Tuesday, India time.
“I am doing everything in my power to combine the necessary humanitarian objective and the imperative to return the hostages, and at the same time, preserve the existence of the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said after the meeting.
“I am not prepared in any way to give in on the victory over Hamas. If we give up on this, we will be in danger in the face of Iran’s entire axis of evil,” he added.
Several representatives of the families of the hostages who accompanied the Israeli PM on flight to Washington and soldiers who fought on October 7, and who have fought in Gaza, also participated in the meeting which was also attended by Netanyahu’s wife Sara.
Representatives of bereaved families who have lost their sons in the fighting in Gaza and the Western Negev were also present at the meeting.
“We are determined to return them all. The conditions for returning them are becoming ripe, for the simple reason that we are putting very strong pressure on Hamas. We see a certain change, and I think that this change will increase,” said Netanyahu.
The Israeli PM said that his visit to the US was an important one, one which will give “the opportunity to bring before the representatives of the American people, and the American people themselves the importance of their support”.
Israel’s top officials, including the Director of the National Security Council, the Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Military Secretary and the Coordinator for the Hostages and the Missing, also participated in the meeting.
