Government efficiency ‘czar’ Musk to cut a lot of waste in US govt: Mark Mobius
With Elon Musk leading the new Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE) under Donald Trump’s presidency in the US, the tech billionaire will be able to cut down on a lot of waste in the US government, ace global investor Mark Mobius has said.
In an interaction with IANS, Mobius said that as a “government efficiency czar”, the tech billionaire will be in a better position to bring required changes to the US government.
“That will be a big contributor to more efficiency and higher productivity in the US,” said Mark Mobius, who runs Mobius EM Opportunities Fund.
US President-elect has announced to appoint maverick entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE) that will be charged with drastically changing government while cutting waste.
Trump said that DoGE “will become, potentially the ‘Manhattan Project’ of our time” — a reference to the US effort during World War II to develop atomic weapons in record time and profoundly affect the world.
The tech billionaire said, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!”
“All actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency. Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know! We will also have a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars. This will be both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining (with a smiley emoji),” said the tech billionaire.
Since it is a new department, it is not clear if the leaders would be in the Cabinet, have to be confirmed by the Senate, and what their titles would be.
10 Houthi operatives killed by US drone strikes in Yemen: Govt source
At least 10 Houthi operatives were killed in two separate US drone strikes in Yemen’s central Al-Bayda province, a Yemeni government military source told the media.The strikes targeted mobile rocket launchers in the As-Sawma’ah and Dhi-Na’im districts, the source said on Tuesday on condition of anonymity.
Local residents reported on social media that Houthi forces cordoned off the targeted vehicles and blocked roads leading to the sites, Xinhua news agency reported.
Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV also reported the two strikes by “US drones,” without providing further details, as the Houthi group rarely discloses information about its casualties or losses.
Earlier on Tuesday, Houthi television reported three airstrikes by “US-British navy coalition warplanes” against the Al-Fazah area, a few kilometres south of the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, but provided no further details on these strikes.
Also on Tuesday, US Central Command posted on social media platform X, stating, “Aircraft from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) support operations against Iran-backed Houthis in the US Central Command area of responsibility,” along with a video showing warplanes taking off from an aircraft carrier.
Al-Masirah TV has reported multiple airstrikes by US-British coalition warplanes in the capital Sanaa, as well as in the Amran and Saada provinces, over the past three days.
Yemen has been engulfed in a civil war since the Houthi group seized control of several northern provinces in late 2014, forcing the internationally recognised Yemeni government out of Sanaa.
Since last November, the Houthi group has launched rocket and drone attacks on Israel and disrupted “Israeli-linked” shipping in the Red Sea, reportedly in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In response, the US-led navy coalition stationed in the Red Sea has conducted regular air raids and strikes against Houthi targets since January to deter the group from disrupting international shipping lanes.
32 killed in Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon
At least 32 people were killed and some others injured in Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, the media reported.According to the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA), in two separate Israeli airstrikes in Mount Lebanon, eight were killed and two injured in the town of Baalchmay, while 12 others were killed and eight more wounded in the village of Joun in Chouf district.
The news agency said five people from the same family were killed in a raid in the southern Tefahta area, adding a paramedic was killed and a civil defence member injured in another raid on the village of Mansouri in the Tyre district, Xinhua news agency reported.
In addition, one was killed and four injured in Hermel, while another was killed in Burj el-Shemali near Tyre, with two more fatalities reported in Tyre city and Roumine village, respectively.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah said it targeted on Tuesday with a squadron of attack drones a logistics base for the Israeli army’s 146th Division, north of the Israeli town of Sheikh Danun.
It also struck the HaHotrim base of the Israeli Air Force, which contains an engine factory and is located south of the Israeli city of Haifa.
In addition, it claimed attacks on more Israeli targets, including Tel Nof Airbase in southern Tel Aviv, Shraga base north of the city of Acre, and bunkers in Neve Ziv, a settlement in northern Israel.
The Islamic Resistance fighters also repelled an Israeli Hermes 450 drone in the western sector of the border area.
Since September 23, the Israeli army has been launching intensive airstrikes on Lebanon in a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah.
In early October, Israel initiated a ground operation across its northern border into Lebanon.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the death toll from Israeli strikes since the beginning of the war on October 8, 2023, has reached 3,287, with injuries totalling 14,222.
Most Hezbollah weapon facilities in Beirut’s suburbs destroyed: Israeli military
A series of Israeli airstrikes over recent weeks have destroyed the majority of Hezbollah’s weapons storage and missile manufacturing facilities situated under Beirut’s southern suburbs, the Israeli military said.
The claim came hours after Israeli warplanes launched one of the heaviest daytime airstrikes on the area since the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict began, killing at least six people, according to Lebanese media on Tuesday.
At least 13 airstrikes hit civilian buildings and two medical centres in the southern suburbs, sending up huge clouds of black smoke, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Israeli military said it continues carrying out attacks on Hezbollah sites in the area with intelligence guidance.
So far Hezbollah has not commented on the Israeli claim or the attacks.
The Israeli military has repeatedly claimed that Hezbollah has set up dozens of missile and rocket production and storage facilities within civilian buildings in densely populated areas of Beirut’s southern suburbs over the past 20 years.
One of the main Hezbollah weapons manufacturing plants that was struck recently had been revealed by Israel at the United Nations in 2020, along with other facilities.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), that complex was built under five residential buildings in Beirut, which housed some 50 families. The site was also located close to a school.
The IDF said that Hezbollah would manufacture various components at the site, including parts for precision missiles.
Before each of the strikes, the IDF issued evacuation warnings to civilians in the corresponding area.
The military said that Hezbollah’s use of civilian sites for weapon storage and manufacturing “directly endangers the residents of Beirut, as many explosives are hidden under the citizens, often without their knowledge”.
The IDF in its statement also noted that the deadly 2020 Beirut port blast, which occurred after some 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored there exploded. The military said that the ammonium nitrate was being “used as a component in Hezbollah’s munitions production process”. More than 220 people were killed in the explosion.
BRS urges Centre to act on AMRUT scam
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao on Tuesday demanded the Centre act on the alleged AMRUT scam in Telangana and said that this is a litmus test for the BJP to demonstrate sincerity in rooting out corruption.
He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond to alleged corruption in the tender process for awarding works under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, he agreed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s allegation that Telangana has become an ATM for Congress but asked why he was not taking action.
“Will you or will you not act on the AMRUT scam in Telangana? This will be a litmus test for BJP leadership in Delhi,” he said
Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s allegation of ‘RR Tax’, he said it was not enough to make accusations about ‘Rahul and Revanth Tax’ in Telangana without any action.
Prime Minister Modi must take immediate steps to address the corruption concerns tied to the AMRUT tenders as BRS has submitted substantial proofs about the corruption to the central government, he said.
KTR along with BRS MPs met the Union Minister for Urban Development Manohar Lal Khatter yesterday and submitted a representation for taking an enquiry and the cancellation of AMRUT tenders.
“He requested time until the upcoming parliament session to gather information and initiate appropriate action. If the central government does not address the corruption in the AMRUT tenders during the parliamentary session, we will bring this issue to the forefront in Parliament, particularly in the Rajya Sabha” KTR said.
The BRS leader alleged that AMRUT tenders were awarded to family members of the Chief Minister and other ministers.
KTR reiterated that there was corruption within AMRUT tender process, valued at over Rs 8,888 crore. He claimed that details about the tenders are not being disclosed, even under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
According to KTR, tenders were awarded to Shoda Constructions, a company tied to the Chief Minister’s brother-in-law, Sudini Srujan Reddy, despite the company’s lack of necessary qualifications.
He further alleged that Indian Hume Pipe Company, a qualified firm, was used as a front while the bulk of the work went to Shoda Construction, which has a limited annual profit.
He said out of six packages awarded under AMRUT, one package worth Rs.1,137 crore went to Shodha Construction.
He also alleged that one of the tenders was given to Raghava Construction, which belongs to son of Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy. He asked how a minister who sits in the Cabinet can give tender to his own’s company.
The BRS leader asserted that this is a prime example of crony capitalism, echoing statements made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He demanded that the central government cancel these AMRUT tenders immediately and alleged that the Chief Minister has also violated the Office of Profit Act, referencing Article 191 of the Constitution.
KTR warned that such violations could result in leaders like Revanth Reddy and Ponguleti losing their positions in line with Sonia Gandhi losing her post in the UPA term in the past.
KTR accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of deceiving the people of Maharashtra with unfulfilled promises, claiming that Telangana’s state government funds, totalling Rs 300 crore, are being misused to spread misleading information in Maharashtra.
According to him these funds, which were supposed to be allocated for local development projects and promises made to the people of Telangana, are instead being diverted for campaign purposes through advertisements.
He argued that the government is using hundreds of crores to advertise the implementation of promises that have not been fulfilled in Telangana.
KTR appealed to Maharashtra voters to support regional parties rather than national parties like Congress and BJP, emphasizing that regional parties have been more effective in countering BJP in states like Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, while Congress, he argued, has proven unable to do so.
