India offers high treatment coverage against TB

0

New Delhi, Nov 1 (IANS) India has one of the highest levels of treatment coverage for tuberculosis, among the 30 high TB burden countries, revealed a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The report showed that India is among seven of 30 high TB-burden countries — Brazil, Mozambique, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia — with more than 80 per cent of treatment coverage in 2023.

The country also achieved a significant increase in the number of people receiving preventative therapy for household contacts of TB patients and people living with HIV, the report showed.

According to the report, 12.2 lakh people in India were put on preventive therapy in 2023, up from 10.2 lakh in 2022, and 4.2 lakh in 2021.

While TB medicines are expensive and the therapy may continue for as long as two years, increasing household expenditures, the government is currently offering free drugs.

The treatment was successful in 89 per cent of the people with drug-susceptible TB; 73 per cent of those with an infection resistant to one of the common medicines rifampicin or resistant to multiple drugs; and 69 per cent of those with extremely drug-resistant TB.

India aims to end TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target, but the country reported 28 lakh TB cases, accounting for 26 per cent — the highest — global TB burden.

India also reported an estimated 3.15 lakh TB-related deaths, accounting for 29 per cent of the deaths globally.

The report also showed a narrowing of the gap in the estimated number of cases and the number of people actually getting diagnosed. India reported 25.2 lakh cases in 2023, increasing from 24.2 lakh the previous year, the report said.

Globally, the WHO report noted that TB again emerged as the leading infectious disease killer in 2023, surpassing Covid-19.

In 2023, about 8.2 million people were newly diagnosed with TB — the highest number and a notable increase from 7.5 million reported in 2022.

Study shows Covid led to a decline in outdoor activities

0

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) A study of 34,000 Americans, published on Thursday, showed that Covid-19 has led to a decline in outdoor activities.

The study noted that people are spending nearly an hour less a day doing activities outside the home — a behaviour that researchers say is a lasting consequence of the pandemic.

The team from Clemson University and University of California Los Angeles in the US reveals an overall drop since 2019 of about 51 minutes in the daily time spent on out-of-home activities. They even found an almost 12-minute reduction in time spent on daily travel, such as driving or taking public transportation.

In a paper published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Planning Association, the team documented a trend toward less and less out-of-home time stretching back to at least 2003.

However, Covid and its aftermath led to a dramatic shift into the home or “going nowhere fast,” which can have significant psychological, societal, and economic consequences, said the researchers.

“In a world where cities cannot rely on captive office workers and must work to attract residents, workers, and customers, local officials might seek to invest more heavily in their remaining strengths,” said lead author Eric A. Morris, Professor of City and Regional Planning at Clemson University.

“These include opportunities for recreation, entertainment, culture, the arts, and more. Central cities might shift toward becoming centres of consumption more than production,” Morris said.

More cocooning in the home might also lead to social isolation, they said, while blaming improvements in information technology and the fact that individuals learned to use this technology in new ways during the pandemic as one of the key drivers behind the trend.

The study showed that the average time for out-of-home activities fell from 334 minutes per day in 2019 to 271 in 2021 — roughly from 5.5 hours per day out-of-home to 4.5 hours.

On the other hand, the researchers also noted positive effects of going nowhere faster, such as less time spent travelling, which may reduce fuel use and emissions and save people valuable time and money.

A Political Storm Brewing: Pawan Kalyan and Trivikram Unite?

0

The dynamic duo of Telugu cinema, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and blockbuster director Trivikram Srinivas, are known for their strong bond and successful collaborations. Their previous hits, such as Jalsa and Attarintiki Daredi, set a high standard for storytelling in the industry. However, their last venture together, Agnyaathavaasi, failed to resonate with audiences, leaving fans longing for a return to form.

Recently, producer Naga Vamsi stirred excitement in the film community by announcing plans for a large-scale political drama slated for release ahead of the 2029 elections. Although he has yet to confirm the director or lead actor, speculation is rampant that Pawan Kalyan and Trivikram might join forces once again for this ambitious project. Trivikram, renowned for his sharp dialogues and witty storytelling, would be an ideal choice to craft a gripping political narrative that aligns with Pawan Kalyan’s political ethos. The blend of Trivikram’s cinematic flair and Pawan Kalyan’s real-life political involvement could create a compelling film that resonates with audiences and reflects current societal issues. Afghan security forces have rescued a child in Afghanistan’s Herat province and arrested two kidnappers, district police chief Mohammad Hasan Ihsan said on Friday.

The child was kidnapped one year ago, and police found him in the Injil district recently and handed him over to his family, Ihsan said, adding police have arrested two persons on the charge of involvement in the kidnapping.

This is the third child released from kidnappers’ clutch over the past month in Herat province, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Taliban-run administration has vowed to crack down on outlaws to ensure law and order in the war-torn country.

Vietnam’s manufacturing sector in October recovers from Typhoon Yagi

0

Hanoi, Nov 1 (IANS) Vietnam’s manufacturing sector in October started to recover from the effects of September’s typhoon, recording renewed increases in both output and new orders, according to an S&P Global Market Intelligence report released on Friday.

The country’s manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index posted 51.2 in October, up from 47.3 in September and back above the 50.0 no-change mark following the disruption caused to the sector by Typhoon Yagi in the previous month, reports Xinhua news agency, citing S&P.

Alongside the rise in total new business, Vietnam’s new export orders also increased in October, according to the report.

Andrew Harker, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said, “October data showed that the recovery from the disruption caused by Typhoon Yagi got underway during the month, with firms seeing a rise in new orders and being able to expand their production.”

“We should hopefully, therefore, see growth pick-up as more manufacturers get back up to full capacity towards the year-end,” he said.

Pyongyang to bolster readiness against nuclear retaliation

0

Seoul, Nov 1 (IANS) North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said on Friday that the current situation on the Korean Peninsula requires Pyongyang to make efforts to bolster its readiness against nuclear retaliation, noting that the reclusive regime will not change its nuclear policy.

Choe made the remark during her meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to a report by Sputnik, which came amid North Korean troops’ possible participation in Russia’s war with Ukraine.

Choe was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency that the current situation, and also future threats and challenges, “require more than ever to strengthen our modern strategic offensive nuclear weapons, as well as improve our readiness for a nuclear response.”

The North Korean official also said the situation on the Korean Peninsula can become “explosive at any moment” as “the military alliance of the United States and South Korea is turning into a military alliance with a nuclear component.”

Choe also said Pyongyang is confident of Russia’s victory in its war with Ukraine and that North Korea will “always stand firmly next to our Russian comrades,” reports Yonhap news agency, quoting Sputnik.

In response, the Russian foreign minister noted that “very close cooperation” has been established between Pyongyang and Moscow in terms of their “military and security services.”

Surging crime in US society fuels public insecurity

0

New York, Nov 1 (IANS) Jaden Thakur will never forget the day his uncle nearly became another victim in America’s gun violence crisis.

The college student, who grew up in New Jersey, recounted the nightmarish scene: One day, while strolling down the street, Thakur’s uncle accidentally bumped into someone, sparking a heated altercation between the two.

“At first, it was verbal, and then the guy kind of showed his gun and made my uncle back down,” he said. At that critical moment, a passerby intervened, drawing his own gun to defend Thakur’s uncle, ultimately preventing the situation from spiralling out of control.

“It was just crazy,” said Thakur, his voice still laced with disbelief. “It’s far too easy to acquire weapons in the US than in other places.”

In Thakur’s view, gun violence is “probably the biggest safety issue” confronting the United States. Official statistics underscore this grim reality: in 2023 alone, the Gun Violence Archive recorded 18,854 fatalities from gun violence, excluding suicides. Mass shootings, defined as incidents with four or more casualties, have doubled over the past decade, peaking in 2021 at 689.

Schools are becoming increasingly unsafe due to the prevalence of guns. By October 15 this year, at least 58 school shootings had left 28 dead and 72 injured across American schools, from kindergartens to colleges. In recent years, school shootings have sharply increased, with 2021, 2022, and 2023 each marking record highs not seen since at least 2008, reports Xinhua, citing CNN.

Today, American civilians own more than 400 million guns, exceeding the country’s population. Deep partisan divisions and influential lobbying groups, such as the National Rifle Association, have routinely stalled gun control laws in Congress.

However, gun violence reflects only one aspect of the rising crime rates in the United States in recent years. In 2020, the United States saw a nearly 30 per cent increase in homicides, marking the largest annual rise on record, according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In 2022, murder rates remained well above pre-pandemic levels, and property crimes, such as burglary, rose to a staggering 1,954.4 incidents per 100,000 people.

A growing sense of public insecurity has made violent crime one of Americans’ top policy concerns in this election year. A Pew Research Center report in February revealed that 68 per cent of Republicans and nearly half of Democrats deemed crime reduction as a policy priority.

Even political violence is on the rise, with presidential candidates becoming targets. Since July, the Republican candidate Donald Trump has escaped three assassination attempts, while the suspect accused of shooting at Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign office in Arizona was found to possess over 120 guns and over 250,000 rounds of ammunition in his home and was preparing for a “mass casualty” act, according to US media reports.

Both candidates have been framing the crime issues in their favour ahead of the election. Harris said in September that violent crime has declined to a “near 50-year low,” citing FBI data on crimes reported by police departments, while Trump claimed that violent crime has “skyrocketed” during the Biden-Harris administration, citing a Justice Department survey.

Such a crime landscape underscores deeper ills of the US society, such as systemic racism, economic inequality, and political marginalisation, all of which are often prolonged and ignored by politicians.

According to an analysis by the Brennan Center for Justice, the number of shootings doubled in the neighbourhood of East New York and nearly tripled in Brownsville in 2020, both hot spots of violence for more than a quarter-century.

The centre noted that these increases reveal a more troubling pattern, which sociologist Patrick Sharkey described as the “rigid geography of violence.” In this pattern, crime remains relatively concentrated in specific areas even as overall levels decline.

A Brookings Institution study links high rates of violent crime and police shootings to socioeconomic inequities, particularly in marginalised communities. Structural racism has fostered conditions where Black populations disproportionately reside in under-resourced areas, with limited access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. This concentration of disadvantage thus feeds cycles of violence.

With election day approaching, Thakur said he remains undecided over which candidate can make America safe as neither appears capable of solving gun-related issues. “Overall, I don’t think anyone is going to change anything.”

Satyam Sundaram Smashes Kamal & Prabhas on Netflix Debut!

0

Tamil cinema has made a splash on Netflix, with *Meiyazhagan* (also known as *Satyam Sundaram*) standing out as a clear audience favorite. The film, starring Arvind Swamy and Karthi, has garnered a stunning 1.9 million views in its debut week on the streaming platform, even trending globally and hitting seventh place in Netflix’s coveted top 10 list. What’s truly remarkable is the film’s post-theater rise, with a 200% jump in collections after its OTT release, showcasing a new trend where films pick up fresh momentum on digital platforms even after their box office run.

Compared to other recent South Indian releases on Netflix, *Meiyazhagan* is proving to be a formidable competitor. While it didn’t reach the colossal numbers of *Kalki 2898 AD* or *The Greatest of All Time*, which garnered 4.5 million and 3.8 million views respectively, it still outperformed big releases like *Indian 2* and *Salaar* by well-known stars Kamal Haasan and Prabhas. Both *Indian 2* and *Salaar* saw 1.7 million and 1.6 million views in their opening weeks, making *Meiyazhagan*’s 1.9 million views a commendable achievement. Even Akshay Kumar’s *Khel Khel Mein* in its third week ranked lower, indicating *Meiyazhagan*’s immediate popularity among audiences across regions.

One reason for *Meiyazhagan*’s success lies in its heartwarming storyline, directed by C. Prem Kumar and produced by Jyothika and Suriya, which appeals widely to viewers beyond Tamil-speaking regions. Arvind Swamy and Karthi’s captivating performances resonate across cultural boundaries, which may explain the strong digital response. In contrast, films by pan-Indian stars such as Kamal Haasan and Prabhas tend to have niche audiences who are mainly attracted by high-octane action, while *Meiyazhagan*’s family-oriented plot offers viewers a more universal experience.

It’s clear that *Meiyazhagan* has become an unexpected OTT sensation, defying the odds and proving that not every blockbuster needs mega-stardom or explosive action. Perhaps Arvind Swamy and Karthi have found the secret sauce for Netflix success—a delightful combo of relatable characters and tender storytelling. Who knew that a quiet, heartwarming drama could outshine the mighty Kamal and Prabhas on their own turf? As they say, sometimes it’s not about the fireworks but the warmth of a well-lit bonfire!

The exciting hat-trick collaboration of Victory Venkatesh, blockbuster director Anil Ravipudi, and Sri Venkateswara Creations for the highly anticipated #VenkyAnil3 is sparking inquisitiveness for several reasons. This dynamic trio has already delivered two major hits, and Anil Ravipudi boasts an impressive track record of delivering only blockbusters. While the upcoming movie promises to be a full-fledged entertainer, it also presents a unique triangular crime narrative.

Today, the makers unveiled the title and first look poster of the film. Titled ‘Sankranthiki Vasthunnam’, the name itself hints at the film’s festive significance, perfectly aligning with its release during Sankranthi. The title design cleverly combines elements of rangoli and a gun, symbolising the celebration and the film’s crime themes. The font adds an attractive touch.

In the first look poster, a lungi-clad Venkatesh strikes a serious pose, sporting shades and holding a gun, flanked by his on-screen wife Aishwarya Rajesh in a traditional look and ex-girlfriend Meenakshi Chaudhary in a trendy avatar. Venkatesh’s look is a perfect blend of traditional and stylish elements, creating a unique fusion that highlights his charisma.

The background features an investigative crime board filled with clues, important dates, and newspaper clippings, hinting at the film’s intriguing plot. Overall, the first look poster piques curiosity and shows Anil Ravipudi’s mark in poster design as well.

The movie enters its final shooting phase, with dubbing work already underway. It is produced by Shirish and presented by Dil Raju. Bheems Ceciroleo scores the music, while Sameer Reddy takes care of the cinematography. AS Prakash is the production designer, while Tammiraju handles the editing. The screenplay was penned by S Krishna and G Adhinarayana, while V Venkat choreographs the action sequences.

Nani’s Swift Urban Entertainer with Shiva Nirvana Hits 2026!

0

In a time when many actors manage only one release every year or two, Nani stands out, consistently delivering at least two projects annually. Known for his swift adaptability and strong script sense, Nani is now set to partner with director Shiva Nirvana once again for a “new-age stylish family entertainer.” This film, under the Mythri Movie Makers banner and composed by Hesham, is positioned to be a quick-turnaround project with just a three-month shooting schedule. It’s slated for an early 2026 release, adding another intriguing collaboration to Nani’s rapidly growing slate.

Comparing this upcoming film with Nani’s ongoing project “Hit 3,” directed by Sailesh Kolanu, we can observe a clear genre and stylistic contrast. While “Hit 3” places Nani in a gritty, intense cop role in a high-stakes, pan-Indian thriller expected to release in 2025, his venture with Shiva Nirvana promises a more family-oriented, urban backdrop. This versatility highlights Nani’s commitment to exploring diverse characters and narratives, while also allowing him to seamlessly switch between demanding roles. In contrast, the Srikanth Odela film, expected for early 2026, may also carry elements of depth, given Odela’s reputation after “Dasara.”

Interestingly, Shiva Nirvana and Nani share a special history, with successful collaborations in “Ninnu Kori” and “Tuck Jagadish.” Both films, though family-centered, had distinct tonal shifts, with “Ninnu Kori” focusing on complex relationships and “Tuck Jagadish” embracing rural family dynamics. Their upcoming project is said to cater to urban sensibilities, bringing a refreshing twist to the family genre with a city-centric story, a style shift for both the director and the actor. Mythri Movie Makers backing this film further solidifies its potential for unique storytelling and mass appeal.

As Nani juggles roles from action cop to family man and everything in between, fans may wonder how he manages such variety in such a short span. But perhaps the real marvel lies in how Nani convinces us that he’s equally believable as a crime-busting officer as he is a relatable, new-age family man. For Nani, it seems, cinematic characters are like popcorn—they’re best enjoyed one after another, and he’s got the knack for serving them hot, fresh, and in record time!
