NASA develops shiny new coat for Orion spacecraft

Washington: NASA has developed a silver, metallic-based thermal control coating for its Orion spacecraft that will protect the vehicle from extreme heat both in orbit and during its fiery return to Earth. Orion’s thermal protection system is one of the most critical parts of the spacecraft intended to facilitate human exploration of asteroids and of Mars. It consists of the spacecraft’s main heat shield that faces into the atmosphere on re-entry to slow the spaceship down and also the grid of tiles known as the back shell. During Orion’s next mission atop the agency’s Space Launch System rocket, called Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), the spacecraft will be in space for more than three weeks and return to Earth under even faster and hotter conditions than during its last flight. “As we move towards building the system for EM-1, we’ve been able to take advantage of what we learned from building and flying Orion to refine our processes going forward,” said John Kowal, NASA’s thermal protection system lead for Orion.

During EM-1, Orion will endure a more intense re-entry environment. While the spacecraft encountered speeds of 30,000feet per second during Exploration Flight Test-1 and temperatures of approximately 2,204 degrees Celsius, it will experience a faster return from lunar velocity of about 36,000 feet per second. The speed difference may seem subtle, but the heating the vehicle sees increases exponentially as the speed increases. Engineering teams are preparing Orion’s heat shield to perform re-entry during any of missions planned near the Moon or in high lunar orbit in the coming years. For these future Orion missions, silver, metallic-based thermal control coating will be bonded to the crew module’s thermal protection system back shell tiles. The coating, similar to what is used on the main heat shield, will reduce heat loss during phases when Orion is pointed to space and therefore experiencing cold temperatures, as well as limit the high temperatures the crew module will be subjected to when the spacecraft faces the Sun.

The coating will help Orion’s back shell maintain a temperature range from approximately minus 101 to 287 degrees Celsius prior to entry and also will protect against electrical surface charges in space and during re-entry. Engineers have also refined the design in ways that improve the manufacturing process and reduce the mass of the spacecraft for the upcoming exploration missions. Instead of a monolithic outer layer, the heat shield will be made of about 180 blocks that can be made simultaneously with the other heat shield components to streamline the labour-and-time-intensive manufacturing process. In addition, engineers have found ways to reduce the mass of the heat shield’s underlying structure, which is composed of a titanium skeleton and carbon fiber skin. Teams have optimised the thickness of the skeleton and the skin based on the pressures that different areas will experience during flight and re-entry, adding more fidelity to the overall structure while allowing it to be lighter.

Me a bore? Blame the director!

20BHAMMI

As a comedian, there are few like him. And in his career of 27 years, he has acted in more than 1,050 films, a feat that has got him into the Guinness Books of World Records. However, in recent times, there has been talk that his comedy is becoming routine — to put it plainly, boring. But the comedian says that he simply follows the director’s orders.‘Director’s the boss’: “I do whatever the directors and writers ask me to do. I can’t argue with them that this character is routine or similar to my earlier film. The same directors and writers created my earlier characters and made me successful,” says Brahmanandam. “I never take the comments made about me seriously. I just do my work. Sometimes people will laugh, sometimes they may not laugh. Moreover, the film business involves a lot of money and I can’t tell the writer or director to design my character as I like. My job is to act according to the director’s vision.”

10 more films to release: Brahmanandam lists around 10 films of his that are releasing soon — Bengal Tiger, Soggade Chinni Nayane, Aatadukundam Ra, Sardar Gabbar Singh, Sarainodu, Abaitho Ammayi, Soukyam, Loafer, Chuttalabbayi, Garam, Mental Police and Krishnashtami. “These are the ones I can think of immediately, there are some more. I hope everyone understands when they see the list of these films,” he laughs. “And I feel proud that many people, especially kids who visit Hyderabad from abroad, want to see me along with historic places like Charminar and Golconda. That gives me more honour than anything else. When I travel, at many places people look at me and laugh, but I still don’t understand why they laugh. Something is there in me.” “Doing comedy is very difficult and if you do it perfectly you can do any kind of roles. But I still feel sad that an award should be included in the National Film Awards for ‘Best Comic Actor’ too. I don’t know why they never look at in this area,” concludes the actor.

Nobody is permanent: The actor is all for new talent. “I don’t want to be in every film, and I can’t do that. Nothing is permanent in this world. When I was young I would do 35 to 40 films a year. Now I can’t work like that and if I thought along those lines then it would be my stupidity,” he says. Coming back to his roles being criticised lately, Brahmanandam justifies, “If you see the present trend in Tollywood, many are eying the horror-comedy genre, because those films are hits. My characters too are designed by writers on the same lines,” he says. Asked about successful films this year, in which he wasn’t present, Brahmanandam says, “I never feel that because of my presence a film will taste success. A film’s success or failure does not totally depend on me,” he says.

Fat pay packet: When asked about his high remuneration, something which stops small filmmakers from approaching him, he says, “I have done many films without remuneration and sometimes for just a token amount. But there is a demand and supply. Whoever wants my presence approaches me. If they thought my remuneration was too high, they would not have taken me.” He adds that he has done films for just Rs 2,500 though he has played key characters in them.

On retiring: The comedian also says that he has not thought about retirement. “Nothing will start with us and nothing will end with us. By God’s grace I have made people laugh all these years and I will continue as long as I can. “Regarding peoples’ criticism, I haven’t given it a thought. I am always peaceful and live my life happily, I don’t worry,” he says.

Completely washing out the stains on him regarding those bold and double-entendre films, Maruthi has emerged victorious with Bhale Bhale Magadivoyi. Like we said earlier, this talented director is now teaming up with senior hero Venkatesh. Here’s what he is going to do.

Refuting reports that they have zeroed on Radha Krishna as the title of the film, Maruthi indicated that a title is yet to be find out for this film.

Anyway, what’s he going to do with Venky now after missing him to show as home minister falling in love with a middle class girl? While Maruthi kept mum, sources close to him revealed he will doing another comedy film only.

Venkatesh is likely to play the role of a cop in this film of Maruthi, but he will be seen as a comedy embracing cop, like in some Rajendra Prasad’s movies. Comedy is a safe theme for both Maruthi and Venky, as our hero is expert at it and the director recently scored hit with one such.

Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan here on Wednesday evening said he does not follow any particular routine as far as food habits are concerned and calls himself a “bad eater”. “I’m a bad eater and I’m sure that when you call home the answer will be the same. I don’t follow any routine. My eating habits are very dissimilar to what any of you are following. I just eat whatever comes to me, I don’t know that it is,” said Amitabh Bachchan.

Bachchan who was present at the launch of Shilpa Shetty’s book, “The Great Indian Diet”, said he considers himself the wrong person to be launching a book on diet due to his eating habits. “I never used to do any kind of exercises. Most of the times when I was working in my earlier films, I never really thought about it though or I wasn’t advised about it or I perhaps didn’t have the time. “But having seen some of my visuals in some of my films about 5-6 years ago, I realised that I needed to be in shape and started going to the gym on some kind of a regular basis,” he added. Bachchan turned vegetarian a few years back and is known to be extremely fond of Indian cuisine.
