Bangladesh interim govt bans student wing of ex-PM Sheikh Hasina’s party
Dhaka, Oct 24 (IANS) The Bangladesh interim government has banned Bangladesh Chatra League, the student organisation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League, after a demand by a student group that led the July-August uprising under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.
The government, under the powers provided in sub-section (1) of Section 18 of the “Anti-Terrorism Act 2009”, banned Bangladesh Awami League’s fraternal organisation “Bangladesh Chatra League”, said the Bangladesh Home Ministry in an official notification.
“At various times since the independence of Bangladesh, especially during the last 15 years of dictatorial rule, the Bangladesh Chatra League, the fraternal organisation of Bangladesh Awami League, has been involved in various public security-related activities including killings, torture, harassment in common rooms, trading of seats in dormitories, gangs, rape, and sexual harassment,” said an order issued by Bangladesh Home Ministry.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, the group led to oust Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, announced five-point demands, including the resignation of Bangladesh President, Mohammed Shahabuddin.
The demands also included banning Awami League’s student organisation, Bangladesh Chatra League.
“Documentary information regarding these have been published in all the major media of the country and some terrorist incidents, the leaders and workers of the organisation have also been proved in the criminal court,” the order issued on Wednesday evening said.
According to the official order, Bangladesh Chatra League leaders attacked the protesting students and the general public with frenzied and reckless armed attacks during the anti-discrimination student movement from July 15.
The official order said, “During the anti-discrimination student movements from July 15, 2024, Bangladesh Chatra League leaders-workers attacked the protesting students and general public with frenzied and reckless armed attacks and killed hundreds of innocent students and persons and endangered the lives of many more people.”
Study links common antibiotic to rise of dangerous superbug
Sydney, Oct 24 (IANS) Australian research has identified a common antibiotic that is driving the rise of an almost untreatable superbug.
In a study published on Thursday, international researchers led by the University of Melbourne, Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, and Austin Health found that an antibiotic commonly prescribed for liver disease patients could expose them to a greater risk of a dangerous superbug, Xinhua news agency reported.
Superbug is the name given to bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi that have developed a resistance to one or more of the antibiotics used to treat them, also known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The World Health Organization has identified AMR as a top global public health and development threat, estimating it contributed to 4.95 million deaths globally in 2019.
The new eight-year study found that the antibiotic rifaximin has led to the global emergence of an almost untreatable form of the AMR superbug vancomycin-resistant enterococcus faecium (VRE), a contagious bacterial infection that can cause severe reactions in hospitalised patients.
Laboratory experimentation and clinical studies undertaken by the researchers found that rifaximin use has caused changes in the DNA of VRE, making it resistant to daptomycin, a major last-resort antibiotic used to treat multidrug-resistant pathogens.
Glen Carter, senior author of the study from the University of Melbourne and the Doherty Institute, said the study challenges the previously-held belief that rifaximin is low-risk for causing AMR.
“We’ve shown that rifaximin makes VRE resistant to daptomycin in a way that has not been seen before,” he said.
“It is also of concern that these daptomycin-resistant VRE might be transmitted to other patients in the hospital; a hypothesis that we are presently investigating.”
The researchers said the findings highlight the critical need for effective genomics-based surveillance to detect emerging AMR.
Turkey identifies attacker involved in terrorist strike on aerospace company
Ankara, Oct 24 (IANS) Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Thursday the identity of one of the attackers involved in the terrorist attack on the facilities of Turkish aerospace company TUSAS in Ankara.
In a post on X, Yerlikaya identified the male attacker as Ali Orek, codenamed Rojger, allegedly a member of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He added that the identification of the female attacker is still underway, Xinhua reported.
Five people were killed and 22 others injured when the two attackers targeted a TUSAS facility in Ankara on Wednesday. Yerlikaya stated on Wednesday that the attack was likely carried out by the PKK.
TUSAS is a major defence and aviation company in Turkey. It produces KAAN, the country’s first national combat aircraft, among other defence equipment.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, has rebelled against the Turkish government for more than three decades.
